Neither dog stairs nor ramps are safest for every pet. A ramp is often the gentler option for dogs with arthritis, back or joint problems, or limited mobility; stairs may suit a small, agile dog that can step up and down comfortably. The right choice depends on your dog’s health and abilities, the access point, and whether the device is stable and easy to use. If your dog has a diagnosed condition or is recovering from surgery, ask your veterinarian what activity and equipment are appropriate.
How to choose between dog stairs and a ramp
Start with the movement your dog can manage comfortably, then consider the place the device will be used. Ramps replace separate step-ups with an incline, which may be gentler for some dogs with sore joints or backs. Stairs require the dog to lift its body from step to step and may work well for dogs that can do so steadily.
| Factor | Ramp | Stairs |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | An incline without separate risers; may be gentler for some dogs with sore joints or backs. PetMD’s veterinary overview | Requires stepping up and down; may work for dogs able to step comfortably. PetMD’s veterinary overview |
| Dog and condition | Worth considering for arthritis and other joint or back conditions; follow the veterinarian’s guidance for diagnosed disease. PetMD; Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine | May suit some small, agile dogs, but comfort and health remain central. PetMD’s veterinary overview |
| Grip and confidence | Check traction and give your dog time to get comfortable with the equipment. PetMD; American Kennel Club | Check step depth, grip or padding, and stability. Hesitation or refusal is a reason to reassess the fit. PetMD |
| Setting | Vehicle ramps may fold or telescope, so portability can matter when moving between locations. PetMD; American Kennel Club | Depending on the product, pet steps may take less floor space beside a bed or sofa. American Kennel Club |
These are selection factors, not a clinical product ranking. The cited sources do not establish a clinically validated incline, dimension, weight rating, or construction feature.
When a ramp may be the better fit
A ramp can be worth considering when a dog struggles with repeated step-ups, especially if joint or back discomfort is a concern. A veterinarian-authored PetMD overview recommends considering ramps for dogs with arthritis and other joint or back conditions. That is practical guidance, not a rule for every dog or a claim that a ramp treats disease.

For dogs with intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), a ramp does not replace veterinary management or change an activity restriction. Cornell advises minimizing time spent going up and down stairs and jumping on and off a deck, bed, or sofa. It says diagnosis begins with a thorough veterinary physical examination. Follow your veterinarian’s plan rather than assuming a ramp makes an activity safe during recovery.
When stairs may work
Stairs may suit a smaller, more agile dog that can use them steadily and without signs of discomfort. Their usefulness depends on the individual dog: a dog that hesitates, slips, or struggles may not be comfortable with that setup, even if the steps fit beside the furniture.

Do not treat stairs as inherently harmful or ramps as automatically safe. The available guidance does not establish that stairs damage every dog’s joints or that ramps prevent injuries. Your dog’s condition, ability, and response matter more than a blanket rule.
What the biomechanics study does—and does not—show
A 2013 study by authors at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine assessed eight adult dogs without evidence of orthopedic or neurological lameness as they ascended a ramp, ascended stairs, and trotted on a flat surface. Ramp ascent produced significantly greater range of motion in several measured forelimb joints than stair ascent (P<0.05). The authors said both exercises could be considered in rehabilitation planning and reported the greatest increase in forelimb joint range of motion during ramp ascent. - 6-PIECE COVERAGE FOR LONGER STAIR RUNS: This 6-pack of stair wedges for dogs provides broader coverage for longer stair sections. Each ramp works independently, letting you create a more continuous pet-friendly path across multiple stairs.
This was a small biomechanics study of healthy dogs. It measured joint range of motion—not injury rates—and does not establish that ramps are safer for every dog or prevent injuries in dogs with arthritis, IVDD, or post-operative restrictions.

Even a well-chosen ramp or set of steps is not useful if your dog is afraid to use it. The American Kennel Club includes guidance from animal health and behavior professionals on gradual introduction; behavior expert Erin Askeland recommends short practice sessions and letting a dog explore the equipment before expecting it to use it. PetMD also notes that some dogs need time to become comfortable with ramps or stairs.
