Stop forced encounters first: let the dogs use the stairs separately, using turns, separate routes, or a suitable barrier. Stair blocking alone does not prove resource guarding, but body-blocking can be one sign of guarding a valued place or item. Don’t push a dog past the other or punish a growl; create space, remove likely triggers from shared areas, and get professional help if the behavior is new, escalating, or unsafe.

Why one dog may block the stairs

Blocking is an observable behavior, not a diagnosis. A dog may be guarding access to a valued place, person, or item, but fear, conflict over access, pain-related avoidance, or another cause may also be involved. The behavior on its own cannot establish which explanation applies.

Context can help a qualified professional assess what is happening: note what occurs immediately before and after the blocking, whether the dog seems tense or relaxed, whether food, toys, a bed, or a preferred person is nearby, and whether the other dog can disengage. Dogs Trust describes body-blocking or refusing to move as possible behavior when a dog guards a favored resting place; Preventive Vet includes shifting body weight to block an item among possible early signs. These are relevant examples, not proof that a dog blocking stairs is guarding. Dogs Trust; Preventive Vet.

How to prevent a risky encounter right now

  1. Move the dogs separately. Take turns using the stairs or use separate routes if the home has them. If needed, have one person guide each dog so they do not have to squeeze past one another.
  2. Use a suitable barrier to control access. A closed door, gate, or other barrier may help keep the dogs apart while one moves. Choose an arrangement that fits the home and stair layout, prevents a forced encounter, gives each dog a calm route, and does not leave a dog stranded or create a fall hazard. Barriers are a general management application here, not a stair-specific tested protocol; no particular gate or installation has been evaluated.
  3. Keep likely triggers out of shared encounters. If blocking happens around food, chews, toys, beds, or a favorite person, do not place those triggers in a shared stair path. Feed dogs separately and provide trigger items only while they are apart. PetMD recommends separate feeding and removing trigger items or offering them only when dogs are separated; VCA Animal Hospitals advises removing valuable items before dogs interact when those items may trigger guarding.
  4. Do not force a close pass. If the dog stiffens, freezes, stares hard, growls, snarls, or snaps, give the dogs space. Do not corner, push, or test whether the blocking dog will move. These can be warning signs, not a measure of how severe the situation is. Preventive Vet; American Kennel Club.
  5. Do not punish growling or other warnings. Change the setup and create distance instead. VCA warns that punishment can increase arousal and aggression and may suppress lower-level signals such as growling; Dogs Trust also advises against telling off a growling dog. VCA Animal Hospitals; Dogs Trust.

What management can—and cannot—do

Separating the dogs and controlling stair access can prevent another forced encounter while you work out what is driving the behavior. It does not necessarily change how a dog feels about the other dog, the stairs, or a nearby resource. Dogs Trust makes this distinction in its general resource-guarding guidance: management can stop a dog practising a guarding response, but it does not change the dog’s feelings. Dogs Trust.

When to contact a veterinarian or behavior professional

  • Contact your veterinarian if the behavior is new or changes suddenly. Physical health can affect behavior even when pain or illness is not obvious. Dogs Trust.
  • Seek qualified behavior support if there is growling, snapping, lunging, biting, repeated conflict, or difficulty moving the dogs safely. A trainer, behavior consultant, or veterinary behaviorist can assess the household context; look for relevant dog-behavior qualifications and experience with conflict between dogs in the same home. Preventive Vet; American Kennel Club.
  • Do not try a stair confrontation as a do-it-yourself training exercise. VCA discusses gradual behavior modification and keeping a dog below the level at which it becomes uncomfortable in its guidance on dog-directed aggression. A qualified professional should determine how to adapt that general principle to these dogs and this home. VCA Animal Hospitals.

If a bite has occurred or aggression is escalating, seek prompt professional guidance rather than relying on a gate or treats alone.
