UK cat insurance can cover eligible veterinary bills for accidents and illnesses, but the policy type, limits, exclusions and claim deductions determine what an insurer will pay. Cover is not the same across policies: routine care is commonly excluded, pre-existing conditions are often restricted, and optional benefits have their own terms and caps. Check the policy schedule and full wording before relying on a benefit.
What veterinary costs can cat insurance cover?
Depending on the policy, eligible vet-fee cover can include treatment for an accident or illness. The insurer’s definition of eligible treatment and the policy’s limits decide whether a particular consultation, test or treatment qualifies. Some providers also offer benefits such as complementary treatment, help with boarding if the owner is hospitalised, or costs connected with a lost or stolen cat, holiday cancellation or emergency travel. These are not standard across the market and may be optional or capped. The Association of British Insurers explains that cover varies by insurer and policy, so read the terms and conditions and ask the insurer if anything is unclear: ABI pet insurance guidance.
How the four main policy types differ
| Policy type | How cover generally works | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Lifetime | May cover eligible ongoing conditions across policy years if you renew continuously. | Annual limits usually reset, but sub-limits may apply. Cover depends on renewal and contract terms. |
| Maximum benefit | Pays eligible costs for a condition up to a set monetary amount, without a time limit. | Once the condition’s monetary cap is used, the insurer stops paying for that condition. |
| Time limited | Pays eligible costs for a condition during a defined period, often up to 12 months, and within monetary limits. | Cover for that condition ends when the time limit or monetary limit is reached. |
| Accident only | Covers eligible treatment for accidental injuries. | Illness treatment is excluded. As a product-specific example, Animal Friends’ 2025 accident-only terms set limits of up to £2,500 per accident per year and a £15,000 lifetime accident limit; these are not industry-wide limits. What do limits, excesses and co-payments mean?
Annual and per-condition limits
A headline annual vet-fee limit may not be available for every condition. A policy can impose a lower cap for a particular condition, treatment, accident or additional benefit. The ABI illustrates this with £10,000 of overall cover but a £2,000 per-condition limit; it is an example, not a market average. A Post Office lifetime policy page displays up to £7,000 a year in veterinary fee cover, which is a named-provider example rather than a recommendation or benchmark: Post Office cat insurance.

Excess and percentage co-payment
The excess is the amount you pay towards a claim under the policy. Some policies also require you to pay a percentage of eligible costs, called a co-payment. The amount and when it applies vary by policy. For example, Animal Friends’ 2025 accident-only document specifies a 20% or 35% co-payment for cats aged 10 and older, depending on the applicable terms. That age rule, along with the document’s waiting-period and geographic restrictions, applies to that product’s terms only.
What may be excluded?
Common restrictions include pre-existing conditions, care during a waiting period, routine or preventative treatment, elective procedures, and some dental or behavioural treatment. A policy may also exclude treatment linked to an illness that could have been prevented by vaccination. These are examples of restrictions that can appear in policies, not universal exclusions; the wording decides what applies to your cat.
Rank #2
- Pre-existing conditions: A condition the cat had before cover began may be excluded or treated under specific policy rules. If you change insurer, a condition the cat has already had may not be covered by the new policy.
- Routine and preventative care: Do not assume vaccinations, routine check-ups or other preventative care are included in standard vet-fee cover.
- Dental and behavioural treatment: Check whether illness and injury treatment are treated differently and whether exclusions or sub-limits apply.
- Waiting periods and other conditions: A policy may restrict claims made soon after cover starts or impose other eligibility conditions.
For the exact exclusions, check the policy schedule and full terms, not just the summary of benefits.
How to compare policies for your cat
Compare the details that affect both eligibility and the amount you may have to pay yourself:
Rank #3
- Whether illness and accidental injury are covered.
- Whether eligible ongoing conditions can continue across renewals, and what happens if you miss a renewal or change insurer.
- Annual, per-condition and lifetime limits, plus any treatment-specific or benefit sub-limits.
- Any time limit on claims for a condition.
- Pre-existing-condition wording and waiting periods.
- Cover for diagnostic imaging, including MRI, and for dental illness and injury.
- The excess, any percentage co-payment, and the circumstances in which each applies.
- Which additional benefits are included or optional, and their caps and conditions.
- Renewal terms and whether making a claim may affect future premiums.
Cats Protection specifically recommends checking dental, behavioural and MRI diagnostic cover. The Financial Ombudsman Service also highlights policy wording, information given at sale, pre-existing-condition clauses, exclusions, time limits and dental treatment as relevant when it considers complaints about declined treatment or changed cover: Financial Ombudsman Service pet insurance guidance.

Lifetime cover is conditional on continuous renewal and the actual contract terms; the label does not mean unlimited cover. If you move to a cheaper policy, a condition your cat has already had may be excluded by the new insurer. Before switching, ask how the new policy treats your cat’s medical history and compare that answer with the existing policy’s renewal terms.
