Lifetime cover is designed to keep eligible ongoing conditions covered across policy years; time-limited cover can stop paying for a condition after a set period or financial limit. Neither is automatically right for every cat. The choice depends on your cat’s medical history, your budget and the exact limits, exclusions and renewal terms in the policy.
How lifetime and time-limited cat insurance differ
The key difference is what can happen when a cat needs treatment for the same condition over more than one policy year. Lifetime policies can continue cover for eligible ongoing conditions after renewal, subject to their terms and limits. With time-limited cover, cover for a particular condition may end when its time window or financial limit is used up—even if the insurance policy itself renews.
MoneyHelper groups lifetime and “annual (or time limited)” policies among four broad types of pet insurance, alongside accident-only and maximum-benefit cover. Terminology varies between insurers: annual renewal describes the contract, while a condition’s time limit describes how long claims for that condition may be covered. Check the product wording rather than relying on the label alone. MoneyHelper’s guide to pet insurance and the Association of British Insurers’ pet-insurance guide explain the broad distinctions.
Lifetime cover
A lifetime policy may allow eligible treatment for a chronic or recurring condition to continue across policy years, provided the policy remains in force, renews as required and the claim meets its terms. “Lifetime” does not mean unlimited: policies can have annual totals, per-condition caps or smaller limits for particular treatments. PDSA describes lifetime cover as potentially covering long-term conditions for as long as the policy is renewed. PDSA’s pet-insurance guidance gives further context.

Time-limited cover
A time-limited policy restricts cover for an individual condition by time, money or both, according to its terms. When the relevant limit is reached, later treatment for that condition may no longer be covered. That can happen even when the policy renews for another year. The specific period and cap differ by product, so do not assume every time-limited policy works the same way.
What happens when a condition continues after renewal?
Imagine your cat develops an illness that requires medication and check-ups over several years. Under lifetime cover, eligible claims may continue into later policy years, subject to the applicable limits and exclusions. Under time-limited cover, claims for that illness may cease once its condition-specific time or financial cap is exhausted. You would then need to fund further care yourself or rely on another source of support.

Renewal is not the same as a guarantee that every claim will be paid or that all terms stay identical. Check whether the annual allowance refreshes, whether there are separate condition or treatment caps, and what you must do to keep the policy in force. As one insurer-specific example, Co-op’s description of its lifetime cover says its annual limit refreshes each year, subject to yearly renewal without a break. That is an example of one product’s terms, not a promise about all lifetime policies.
What to compare before choosing a policy
Use the policy schedule and wording, not just the product name or headline premium. Compare the following details for the cover you are considering:

- Condition continuity: Can an eligible chronic or recurring condition remain covered after renewal, or does cover end after a specified period or condition limit?
- Vet-fee limits: What is the total annual limit? Are there separate caps per condition, treatment, test or medication? Does each relevant limit reset at renewal? A large overall limit can still come with a smaller condition-specific cap.
- Your share of costs: What is the fixed excess? Is there also percentage co-insurance or an age-related excess? MoneyHelper notes that an excess may combine a flat fee and a percentage amount.
- Exclusions and eligibility: Which conditions and treatments are excluded? Are there age restrictions or waiting periods? Terms vary by insurer and policy.
- Renewal and affordability: What are the renewal terms, and could you manage the premiums and out-of-pocket costs over time? MoneyHelper says premiums are likely to increase as a pet gets older; the actual amount depends on the quote and product.
- Switching implications: If your cat develops a condition, a new insurer may treat it as pre-existing and exclude it. Ask the proposed insurer what switching would mean for your cat before ending existing cover.
The ABI advises: “These will vary between insurers and policies so it is important to always read your policy’s T&Cs and if in doubt, speak to your insurer.” Its guide was published in 2015; use it for the broad distinction, and verify current details in the product documents.
Pre-existing conditions can limit your options
Insurers generally do not cover illnesses or injuries a pet had, or showed signs of, before the policy began. The insurer’s definition and how it treats symptoms, consultations and related conditions matter, so disclose your cat’s history accurately and ask for clarification if a condition’s status is unclear. A policy label cannot override a pre-existing-condition exclusion.

Which type may suit your circumstances?
Lifetime cover may suit you if
- You value the possibility of continued cover for eligible long-term or recurring conditions.
- You can budget for the premium, excess and any applicable limits over time.
- You have checked the renewal conditions and understand what is excluded or capped.
Time-limited cover may suit you if
- You prioritise a lower premium and accept that cover for one condition may run out.
- You understand how the time and financial caps work for each condition.
- You could manage further treatment costs if a condition becomes ineligible for claims.
PDSA says time-limited cover is generally cheaper than more comprehensive lifetime cover, but there is no universal price difference or single best policy established here. Compare actual quotes on the same basis, including limits, excesses, exclusions and renewal terms. A lower initial premium may mean less continuity for ongoing treatment, while lifetime cover still has limits and does not guarantee a claim will be paid.

How to make the decision
- Start with your cat’s history. List diagnosed conditions, symptoms and consultations, and ask how each insurer treats them.
- Decide what you could pay yourself. Consider both the premium and possible treatment costs that exceed a policy limit or fall outside cover.
- Compare the condition rules. Find the time or financial cap for each condition, any annual or treatment sub-limits, and whether limits renew.
- Check the renewal and switching terms. Confirm what must happen to keep cover continuous and ask the proposed insurer how existing or newly developed conditions would be handled.
- Read the current policy documents before buying. If a term is unclear, ask the insurer to explain it before relying on cover.
