For a sniff walk, the American Kennel Club (AKC) suggests starting with a 10–15-foot line attached to a well-fitting harness; the right length depends on the space, your dog, your handling skills, and local rules.
What makes a long leash useful for a sniff walk?
A long line is a fixed-length leash that lets a dog explore farther than a standard short leash while the handler remains connected. The dog can move ahead and investigate at a comfortable pace, while the handler manages the slack and can reel in extra line when needed. AKC discusses long lines for exploration and recall practice, but a leash does not guarantee recall or make a crowded or hazardous area safe.

How long should a long line be?
Choose a length that gives your dog room to explore without leaving you with more line than you can manage. AKC suggests 10–15 feet for sniff walks and 15–20 feet for recall practice in a larger, more distracting area. These are situational recommendations, not universal rules. Longer lines require more open space and active handling.

What to look for when choosing a long line
Material and feel
Long lines are available in materials including nylon, biothane, climbing rope, cotton, and flat nylon. The cited guidance does not establish one material as best for every dog or setting. If considering rope, Preventive Vet advises choosing a soft, pliable line; thin rope can cause rope burn. Think about how the material feels in your hands and how it will behave in the places you walk.

Width, weight, and clasp
Match the line’s thickness and material to your dog’s size and strength. Preventive Vet notes that a wider leash needs a heavier clasp, so check that the hardware is substantial enough for the line and dog without making the setup cumbersome.
Length and handling
Consider whether you can comfortably handle loops and slack, and whether your usual walking area has enough open space to reduce tangles and hazards. A longer line is useful only when you can keep it under control.

Harness attachment
Use a well-fitting harness, preferably attaching the line to its back ring. The cited guidance recommends this arrangement to reduce neck pressure or jolting if a dog reaches the end of the line. AKC also discusses the combination of a harness and long line in its guide to off-leash readiness.
How to use a long line more safely
- Choose an appropriate open area. Give the dog and line enough room; avoid settings where the line is likely to tangle around people, dogs, or obstacles.
- Attach the line to a well-fitting harness. Use the back attachment point rather than attaching the long line to a collar.
- Manage slack as you walk. Let the line remain loose where possible, gather excess line into manageable loops, and be ready to reel it in.
- Protect your hands and legs. Preventive Vet suggests gloves to reduce leash-burn risk, along with long pants and closed footwear. These precautions cannot guarantee that an injury will not occur.
- Check the rules for your location. Look up the rules for the particular park, trail, or jurisdiction before using a long line.

Long line or retractable leash?
A fixed-length long line is handled by letting out and gathering the line yourself. A retractable leash extends from a spool as the dog moves. With a long line, the handler actively manages the available slack rather than relying on the spool mechanism. Either way, the line does not replace supervision or make an unsuitable location safe.
