Start with a few easy treat searches: hide food under tennis balls in a muffin tin or in one of several clean boxes, then invite your dog to sniff it out. These simple games give dogs a chance to use their noses and provide mental enrichment. They may help occupy a dog indoors, but they are not a guaranteed way to tire every dog or a substitute for needed physical activity.
Set up a simple indoor scent game
Use small, familiar treats your dog is motivated to find, along with ordinary household items. Begin in a quiet space and make the first search easy enough that your dog can succeed quickly. Watch your dog throughout the game, and use sturdy, clean items that are safe for your dog to investigate.
Muffin-tin search
- Place a few treats in the cups of an empty muffin tin.
- Cover the baited cups with tennis balls, keeping some cups uncovered if that makes the first round easier.
- Set the tin down and let your dog move the balls to uncover the treats. Praise the search and let your dog eat each find.
- For another round, change which cups contain treats. Once your dog understands the game, make the food less obvious by baiting fewer cups.
Box search
- Gather several clean, empty boxes and put your dog in another room while you prepare the search.
- Place treats in one or more boxes; leave the others empty.
- Bring your dog in and encourage them to investigate. Praise successful finds and let your dog eat the treats.
- When all the hidden treats have been found, end the search clearly rather than letting your dog continue looking for food that is no longer there.
Treat hide-and-seek
Hide a treat in an accessible container or another straightforward spot, then invite your dog to find it. Keep early hiding places easy to investigate. As your dog gets the idea, gradually make the search more challenging by changing the hiding place or adding containers.
Make the game harder gradually
Change one part of the search at a time. You might add another box, bait fewer muffin-tin cups, or choose a less obvious but still accessible hiding place. Let your dog work out where the treat is rather than repeatedly pointing to the reward. Praise the effort and success, and move the food between rounds so the dog has to search rather than rely on a memorized location.

A snuffle mat or commercial food puzzle is an optional reusable way to hide treats; a beginner scent-work kit is relevant only if you want to pursue structured odor training. When to explore formal scent work
Casual food searches are enough for indoor enrichment. If you want a more structured activity, the American Kennel Club describes introducing a scent target, rewarding the dog for investigating its source, and progressing from a held target to a floor placement and simple hides in its guide to teaching scent work at home.

AKC Scent Work is a sport in which dogs search for named odor targets and alert their handlers. Its getting-started overview describes indoor, outdoor, container, and buried searches. The sport uses birch at Novice level and may introduce anise, clove, and cypress at later levels, as described in the AKC’s at-home training guide. These targets and search formats belong to formal sport training; they are not required for a household treat game.

Nose-led searches let dogs channel their interest in sniffing and offer mental stimulation. The American Kennel Club describes scent games as enriching for dogs in its guide to indoor scent games. The available guidance does not show that a short search reliably tires every dog, quantify how much energy a game uses, or establish that scent games replace exercise. Treat them as one useful indoor activity, not a guaranteed fatigue fix.
