How to choose and use a dog life jacket
Check fit and useful features
Choose a life jacket that fits your dog properly and is appropriate for the activity. For boating, AAHA recommends looking for bright colors, reflective material, and a sturdy handle. These features support visibility and handling; they do not remove the need for supervision.
Introduce water gradually
Do not assume every dog can swim well. Introduce your dog to water in a controlled setting, begin in shallow water, and move gradually into deeper water as the dog becomes comfortable. Body structure can affect swimming ability; AAHA notes that bulldogs and pugs may struggle.
Stay close and supervise
Watch your dog closely around water, even if the dog is an experienced swimmer. Dogs can tire or run into difficulty. A life jacket is a safety aid, not a reason to leave a dog unattended.

For boating, plan beyond flotation
AAHA recommends a properly fitted life jacket for pets joining a boat. It also advises providing a shaded resting area and fresh water, keeping the dog away from hazards such as fishing hooks and fuel, and knowing the location of the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.
What Coast Guard guidance does—and does not—say about dog jackets
The U.S. Coast Guard’s life-jacket guidance addresses human life jackets, including fit, use, and vessel requirements for people. It does not establish that a dog jacket is U.S. Coast Guard-approved or set canine-specific legal requirements. Do not infer a dog product’s approval from guidance about human personal flotation devices.
