A frightened or injured dog may bite, even if it is normally gentle. If your dog is struggling to breathe, has blue, gray, white, or very pale gums, collapses, becomes unresponsive, has a seizure, is bleeding heavily, seems very weak, has a known injury, or may have been poisoned, seek emergency veterinary care now. Do not wait for your dog to settle down.
What to do in the first few minutes
- Keep everyone safe. Move children and other pets away. Approach slowly, speak quietly, and avoid grabbing, crowding, or leaning over your dog. Minimize handling unless it is needed to get the dog to care.
- Check for emergency signs without delaying help. If you can do so safely, notice whether breathing looks difficult and whether the gums appear blue, gray, white, or very pale. Collapse, unresponsiveness, seizures, heavy bleeding, visible injury, or sudden severe weakness also warrant urgent veterinary attention.
- Call a veterinary professional. For emergency signs, call an emergency animal hospital while arranging transport. If your dog is stable but still acting strangely, call your regular veterinarian promptly for triage. Tell them when the change began and what you know about where your dog has been.
- Preserve clues if poisoning is possible. Keep your dog away from the suspected substance. Save its packaging or note the plant or product name, and share that information with the veterinarian. Do not induce vomiting or give medication, food, or home remedies unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically directs you to.
- Dry your dog only if it is stable. If your dog is alert, breathing normally, and has no emergency signs, gently pat the coat with a clean towel and keep the dog somewhere safe and comfortable. If shock is suspected, VCA advises quiet handling and conserving heat with blankets or towels while arranging veterinary care. Do not let drying delay a trip to the clinic.
How urgent is the situation?
| What you observe | What to do |
|---|---|
| Difficulty breathing; blue, gray, white, or very pale gums; collapse; unresponsiveness; seizure; heavy bleeding; known trauma; or marked weakness | Seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Call the emergency clinic while arranging transport. |
| Your dog is alert and breathing normally, but remains unusually fearful, withdrawn, disoriented, or unlike itself | Call your veterinarian promptly for advice. Sudden behavior changes merit assessment even when there are no obvious emergency signs. |
| You suspect a toxin exposure, whether or not symptoms seem severe | Contact a veterinarian, emergency animal hospital, or animal poison-control service promptly. Do not try to treat the exposure at home. |
Merck Veterinary Manual identifies trauma, shock, poisoning, breathing difficulty, ongoing seizures, loss of consciousness, and severe bleeding as emergencies requiring immediate treatment. These are warning signs, not a diagnosis of what happened to your dog.
Why wetness and strange behavior do not reveal the cause
A wet coat does not show whether a dog got caught in weather, entered water, encountered a chemical, became cold, or was injured. Wetness combined with panic, disorientation, withdrawal, or another sudden behavior change is not enough to identify the cause remotely.
The behavior change matters on its own. The American Animal Hospital Association notes that sudden fearfulness, aggression, or withdrawal can signal pain or distress and calls for a full veterinary exam. Unusual lethargy, disorientation, or not responding can accompany serious problems, including poisoning, stroke, heatstroke, or shock. A veterinarian needs to assess your dog in context rather than infer a cause from the wet coat.

If poisoning may be involved
The FDA says a pet’s veterinarian is the best resource for advice about a potentially dangerous exposure and recommends contacting one quickly. If your regular veterinarian is unavailable, call an emergency animal hospital or poison-control center. ASPCA likewise advises contacting a veterinary professional before taking action or giving your pet anything.
Do not induce vomiting on your own. The 2026 RECOVER guidance recommends against routine prehospital vomiting induction; any exception should come from a veterinary professional who can assess the specific exposure and your dog’s condition.

Share what you observed without guessing at a diagnosis. Useful details include when your dog came home, when the behavior changed, whether the dog may have been exposed to a toxin or sustained an injury, and any changes in breathing, responsiveness, movement, or gum color.
