Keep your pets apart from the found dog, and do not try to catch it if it seems frightened, injured, or unsafe to approach. If you can safely contain the dog, check for identification, arrange a microchip scan, and report it to your local animal-control agency or shelter. Local rules determine where the dog should stay and what steps are required.
First, decide whether it is safe to approach
Pause and assess the scene from a distance. Consider traffic, whether the dog can be kept in a secure area, and whether its behavior or condition makes handling unsafe. Do not chase, corner, or grab a dog that is highly anxious, behaving aggressively, or seriously injured. A frightened dog may bite even if it is usually friendly.
If you cannot safely contain the dog, keep your distance and call local animal control or the appropriate emergency animal service. Tell the responder where the dog is, what it is doing, and whether it appears injured or has bitten anyone. VCA Animal Hospitals advises that when capture is not safe, animal control should take over: VCA’s guidance on finding a stray dog or cat.

Keep the found dog separate from your pets
Do not bring the dog into a shared space with your resident animals or start introductions. The dog’s health and vaccination status are unknown, and fear or stress can make interactions unpredictable. If you can safely contain it, use a closed room or a secure barrier to keep the animals apart, and do not leave them together unsupervised.

Wash your hands after contact with the dog, its belongings, food, or waste. Clean up waste carefully and do not share bowls or food with household pets while the dog is separated. CDC’s hygiene advice for pets in evacuation centers comes from that specific setting; these are cautious hygiene practices for contact with an unfamiliar animal, not a claim that the guidance was written for found-dog intake at home: CDC guidance on pets in evacuation centers.
Check for an owner and report the dog locally
- Look for visible identification only if it is safe. Check for a collar tag without creating a risky handling situation. If there is a phone number, contact the listed owner.
- Arrange a microchip scan. If there is no useful tag, ask a local shelter or veterinary clinic about scanning the dog for a chip.
- File a found-dog report. Contact the local animal-control agency or shelter and follow its instructions. Share a clear photo through the local lost-and-found channels it recommends.
- Ask where the dog should stay. The agency can explain whether to bring the dog to an intake facility or whether temporary care at home is allowed and appropriate.
Reporting requirements, shelter intake practices, and legal hold periods vary by location. Do not assume that social-media posts alone satisfy local rules or that finding a dog makes it legally yours. For example, England’s local-authority responsibilities are specific to that jurisdiction; they are not a general rule for other places. Check your own local agency’s instructions. Choose temporary care only if it is safe and permitted
There are two possible routes if the dog can be handled safely: take it to a shelter or animal-control intake as directed, or hold it temporarily only if local procedures allow and you can keep it securely separated from your pets. The local agency’s instructions and your household’s ability to maintain separation should guide the choice. If you cannot keep the dog safely contained, tell the agency rather than attempting to manage the situation alone.

Wash a bite or scratch thoroughly with soap and water, then seek medical advice promptly. Get urgent care for a deep wound, uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of infection. Rabies risk and the need for post-exposure treatment must be assessed by a clinician or public-health officials, especially when the dog’s vaccination status is unknown or it appears ill. If the dog has bitten someone, report the incident to local animal control and follow local public-health instructions.

CDC says rabies spreads primarily through bites or scratches and describes rabies as a preventable viral disease of mammals usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Keep your own pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date, and ask your veterinarian what to do if a resident pet has direct contact with or is bitten by the found dog. CDC’s U.S. rabies guidance includes more than 100,000 Americans vaccinated after potential exposure each year and more than four million Americans reporting animal bites each year; those national figures do not estimate the risk from any particular dog: CDC rabies prevention guidance and CDC guidance on dogs and bite prevention.
