Move your dog away from the hawk and leave the area. Check your dog carefully; if the bird made contact or you see a wound, contact a veterinarian promptly. If the hawk keeps swooping or the encounter happens repeatedly, avoid the location and ask your state or local wildlife agency for advice.
What to do during a hawk attack
- Get your dog away. Move away from the bird and leave the area, especially if it is repeatedly swooping or may be defending a nest. Do not approach, capture, or try to handle the hawk. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources recommends avoiding areas where raptors are acting aggressively; if you cannot avoid the area or safety is at risk, contact a district wildlife biologist.
- Check your dog for injury. Look for signs of contact or visible wounds. If the bird struck your dog or you find a wound, call a veterinarian promptly for advice.
- Stay away if the risk continues. Avoid the site if the bird remains aggressive or the incident repeats. Contact your state or local wildlife agency for location-specific guidance rather than approaching the bird.
If the hawk made contact with your dog
Contact a veterinarian promptly if the hawk struck your dog or you find a wound. Talons can cause punctures that may not be obvious at first glance: an archived 2013 Alaska Department of Fish and Game account describes a veterinarian treating pets attacked by a great horned owl, including a dog with punctures near its eye and around its neck and back. This is one incident report, not a study of how often such injuries happen.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advises that if a person or pet is attacked and the skin is broken, wash the wound and treat it with antiseptic. That is general agency guidance, not a dog-specific first-aid or veterinary triage protocol; it does not replace a veterinarian’s advice for an injured dog. USFWS guidance also warns against getting too close to or attempting to handle wild birds.
Can a hawk carry away a dog?
A hawk is unlikely to fly away with a pet, according to North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission guidance. The agency says a hawk may rarely dive after a small dog or cat. The available official guidance uses terms such as “rare” and “unlikely”; it does not establish a reliable attack rate for dogs.

How to reduce the chance of another encounter
Supervise small dogs outdoors
Keep small dogs on a leash and supervise them closely outside. North Carolina Wildlife advises against leaving small pets unattended outdoors, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources similarly recommends not leaving small dogs or cats outdoors unattended in places where hawks and owls frequently hunt.
Avoid an active nest or repeatedly aggressive bird
Hawks may act aggressively while nesting, and inexperienced juvenile hawks may also attack small pets, according to Indiana DNR. Avoid the area if a bird is repeatedly swooping or behaving aggressively. If avoidance is not practical or the problem continues, ask local or state wildlife staff for advice.

Consider protected outdoor access
A covered outdoor dog run may provide a more protected option for recurring outdoor access, but the agencies cited here do not evaluate dog-run products or establish that any particular enclosure prevents hawk attacks. Michigan DNR’s netting advice concerns outdoor pens, especially poultry enclosures; it should not be treated as a guarantee of protection for dogs.

Contact your state or local wildlife agency if a hawk remains aggressive, encounters recur, or you cannot avoid the location. Indiana DNR advises contacting a district wildlife biologist when an aggressive raptor creates a safety concern or the area cannot be avoided. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also cautions people not to get too close to or handle wild birds. Wildlife rules and local conditions vary, so seek advice from the agency responsible for your area.
