Never leave a baby or young child alone with a dog—even a familiar family pet. An adult should directly supervise every interaction and separate the child and dog whenever they cannot. A swing, a baby gate, or a dog’s gentle history is not a substitute for supervision.
Can I leave my baby alone with our dog for a minute?
No. If you need to step away or cannot focus on the interaction, put the dog and baby in separate spaces. The U.S. Department of Defense family guide advises direct adult supervision and says pets should not sleep in a room with an unattended infant or child. Do not leave an infant alone with a dog even while the baby is in a swing. An AAP News article from 2013 specifically warned against this; a swing does not remove the need to keep an adult present.
What does direct supervision mean?
Stay close enough to intervene immediately and keep your attention on the child and dog. The guidance calls for supervision or direct adult supervision, but does not set a standard distance, adult-to-child ratio, or number of seconds. The practical rule is simple: if you cannot watch and respond, separate them.

How should I manage a dog’s space around a baby?
Make sure the dog can rest and eat without the child approaching. Do not let a child disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies, or take the dog’s food or toys. Avoid rough play, wrestling, tug-of-war, teasing, tail-pulling, hugging, and putting a child’s face close to the dog’s face. Children should be taught to stay calm and move gently around dogs. What if the dog turns away, stiffens, or growls?
Stop the interaction and give the dog space. Turning away, stiffening, growling, or trying to move out of reach can signal discomfort; do not punish or force the dog to remain near the child. Does a familiar, gentle dog still need supervision?
Yes. A dog’s history with the family does not guarantee how it will respond in every situation. The CDC says young children are more likely than adults to be bitten, and many bites to young children happen during everyday activities with familiar dogs. In its April 9, 2026 release, the AVMA said more than 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year in the United States and children account for at least half of those injuries. The CDC reports that nearly one in five people bitten by a dog requires medical attention. What are the essential safety rules?
- Supervise every interaction between a baby or young child and a dog.
- Separate them whenever an adult cannot watch and intervene directly.
