To get rid of Asian lady beetles indoors, vacuum or sweep them up and empty the vacuum outdoors promptly. Avoid crushing them, because they can release a fluid that stains walls and fabric. To reduce next season’s arrivals, inspect the home and seal suitable gaps, repair screens, and fix weather stripping before beetles gather in fall.
These beetles typically enter buildings seeking a sheltered place to overwinter, rather than establishing a breeding population indoors. University extension guidance favors removal and exclusion over routine indoor insecticide use.
The short version
- Vacuum or sweep up beetles you see. Avoid crushing or swatting them to prevent stains.
- Empty the vacuum outdoors promptly or remove its bag outside so beetles do not return indoors.
- Inspect likely entry points, including doors, windows, siding, vents, and utility openings.
- Repair screens and weather stripping and seal suitable cracks before the local fall congregation period.
- Do not rely on routine indoor spraying. Insecticides are not the default solution; any limited use depends on local guidance and the product label.
- Leave outdoor beetles alone unless they are causing a confirmed crop problem. Adults and larvae feed on soft-bodied pests.
For practical guidance, see Virginia Tech Extension’s information on multicolored Asian lady beetles and UNH Extension’s advice for removing them from a house.
What are Asian lady beetles?
In homes, “Asian lady beetles” usually refers to multicolored Asian lady beetles, also called Asian ladybugs: Harmonia axyridis. Their color can range from pale yellowish brown to orange-red, and their spot count varies. The area directly behind the head, called the pronotum, can help with identification. For identification advice, see the University of Maryland Extension resource.

Why are they entering your home?
Adults gather on buildings in late summer and fall and seek protected places to spend the winter. They may enter through gaps around doors and windows, siding and trim, vents, and utility or pipe openings. Once inside, they shelter in protected parts of the building and may become visible in living spaces later.
Timing varies by region and local conditions. For example, Virginia Tech Extension describes fall entry beginning in early fall and a local activity peak around October 15. That is a Virginia observation, not a nationwide calendar date; follow local extension guidance for timing in your area.
What to do if beetles are inside now
- Vacuum or sweep up the beetles. This removes exposed insects without crushing them.
- Empty the canister outdoors or remove the vacuum bag outside promptly. This helps keep collected beetles from returning to living areas.
- Clean up any remaining beetles without crushing them. Avoid swatting or smearing them, which can cause staining.
- Plan repairs before the next local fall congregation. Removal addresses beetles already inside; exclusion addresses future entry.
Routine indoor insecticide use is not recommended by UNH Extension, and Virginia Tech Extension says indoor use is not recommended except in severe cases. Spraying indoors should not be treated as a way to prevent entry or solve the source of the problem.

How to seal your home before fall
Inspect the building before local fall activity begins. Check doors and windows, siding and trim, attic and basement access, vents, and utility or pipe penetrations. Repair damaged screens and use correctly fitted weather stripping where needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a repair that suits the opening. Virginia Tech Extension recommends silicone or silicone-latex caulk for suitable cracks and leaks. Do not seal vents or moving joints that need to remain open.
- Walk around the exterior and look for gaps around doors, windows, trim, siding, vents, and service penetrations.
- Repair or replace damaged screens and fit weather stripping at doors and windows.
- Seal suitable fixed cracks with an appropriate caulk, such as silicone or silicone-latex caulk where suitable.
- Keep required vents and moving joints open. Do not block openings that must remain functional.
- Finish work before beetles gather locally in fall. UNH Extension suggests sealing before mid-September as a regional example, not a universal deadline.
Which approach should you use?
| Approach | What it addresses | When to use it | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vacuuming or sweeping | Beetles already indoors | As soon as you see them | Dispose of collected beetles outdoors; avoid crushing them. |
| Sealing gaps and repairing screens or weather stripping | Future entry | Before local fall congregation | Find openings and choose a suitable repair for each. |
| Insecticide | Potentially some exterior entry points, in limited circumstances | Only if local guidance and the product label support it | Not a routine indoor solution; timing and permitted use matter. |
Removal and exclusion solve different stages of the problem and can be used together. Virginia Tech Extension notes that any outdoor treatment, if used, must be timed before entry; indoor spraying does not prevent entry. Follow current local guidance and the product label, and do not treat pesticide use as necessary.

Are Asian lady beetles harmful to the home?
The main household concern is nuisance: beetles can gather indoors, and crushing them can release fluid that stains walls and fabric. Their presence indoors should prompt attention to entry points, not an assumption that they are establishing a household breeding population.
Outdoors, adults and larvae can be beneficial. Missouri Extension says they feed on aphids, mealybugs, scale, and other soft-bodied pests. Focus on excluding them from buildings rather than removing them from the yard without a reason.

If you cannot locate or reach entry points, or the problem recurs, consider asking a local home weatherization or pest-exclusion professional to inspect the building. Ask them to identify entry routes and explain the proposed repairs. Any pesticide use should be secondary, consistent with local guidance, and permitted by the product label.

FAQ
How can I get rid of Asian lady beetles in my house?
Vacuum or sweep them up, empty the vacuum outdoors promptly, and avoid crushing them. Then inspect and repair likely entry points before the next local fall congregation.
Do Asian lady beetles reproduce indoors?
They typically enter buildings to shelter for winter rather than establish a breeding population indoors. Virginia Tech Extension says they do not reproduce or establish inside the house, and Arkansas Extension says they do not lay eggs in homes.
Should I spray Asian lady beetles indoors?
Routine indoor spraying is not the recommended default. UNH Extension says insecticides are not recommended for this problem; Virginia Tech Extension allows a narrow qualification for severe cases. Follow local guidance and the product label.

When should I seal my home?
Complete repairs before beetles begin gathering in fall in your area. Timing varies by location; UNH Extension’s suggestion to seal before mid-September is a regional example, not a universal deadline.
Are Asian lady beetles useful in the garden?
They can be. Missouri Extension says adults and larvae feed on aphids, mealybugs, scale, and other soft-bodied pests. Leave them outdoors unless they are causing a confirmed crop problem.
The bottom line
Vacuum or sweep up indoor Asian lady beetles, dispose of them outdoors, and do not crush them. They commonly enter buildings for winter shelter, so sealing suitable gaps and repairing screens and weather stripping before local fall activity is the lasting prevention step. Routine indoor pesticide use is not the default; any exception or exterior treatment should follow local guidance and the product label.
