Put a secure gate or closed door between them, or move the baby to a safe place with an attentive adult. Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog, even a familiar family pet. Once everyone is safe, address the baby’s needs and arrange qualified help if the dog’s behavior worries you.
What to do right now
- Create distance calmly. Put the dog behind a closed door or secure gate, or move the baby to a safe area with an adult. Do not force the dog to approach, punish growling, or hold the baby close to make the dog get used to them.
- Keep the baby with an attentive adult. American Kennel Club (AKC) GoodDog! Helpline trainer Paisley Lunchick advises: “At no time should a small child be left alone with a dog, no matter the age, breed, size, or temperament of the canine.” AKC trainer guidance
- Maintain separation if the dog is hard to manage. If the dog is fixated, lunging, snapping, growling, or cannot be safely managed, keep the dog and baby apart and consult a qualified trainer or behaviorist. A short list of behaviors cannot diagnose a dog, but concerning behavior warrants help. AKC guidance on baby safety recommends professional consultation when you are concerned.
- Attend to the baby once the dog is secure. If you feel overwhelmed by crying, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises placing the baby in a safe place, such as a crib or playpen, and taking a brief break. Contact the baby’s doctor if you think there may be a medical reason for the crying. HealthyChildren.org’s calming guidance
Why a dog may react to crying
A baby’s unusual sounds and unpredictable movements may raise a dog’s arousal. AKC trainer guidance notes that this can create bite risk, but it does not mean a particular dog will bite. Treat the reaction as a reason to manage distance, not as a diagnosis or a prediction. AKC trainer guidance
Watch for possible signs of concern such as lip licking, yawning, turning the head away, furrowed brows, or ears held low. These cues are not a diagnosis on their own. If you notice them, calmly increase space and manage access; do not punish the dog for showing signs of concern. AKC’s examples of dog stress signals
Set up safe separation for future crying episodes
Give the dog a place to retreat that the baby cannot enter, and use a secure gate or closed door to keep the areas separate. A crate, bed, or gated room may serve as a dog-only safety zone; use a crate as a retreat only if it is already a suitable, familiar place for your dog. The baby should not enter the dog’s private space. A barrier helps manage access, but it does not replace an adult supervising whenever the dog and baby share a space. AKC baby-safety guidance and AKC’s introduction guidance describe these options.

Preparing a dog for a new baby
If you are preparing for a baby’s arrival, AKC recommends practicing baby-related routines and basic obedience skills, and introducing infant sounds gradually. It also suggests letting the dog adjust to the baby’s smell, sight, and sound. These are preparation suggestions, not a guarantee that a dog will be comfortable or safe unsupervised. AKC’s preparation guidance and AKC’s dog-and-baby introduction guidance cover these steps.

Babies may cry without an apparent cause. The AAP’s guidance on responding to cries and soothing a fussy baby offer caregiver advice. If you suspect illness or another medical cause, contact the child’s doctor rather than assuming the crying is ordinary.
