The right cat breed for your home depends on your time, budget, activity level, grooming capacity, and the other people and animals in your household. Breed tendencies can help you know what to ask, but they do not guarantee an individual cat’s personality; meet the cat when possible and consider adoption as well as a pedigree kitten.
This guide explains how to compare cats, research health and welfare, and choose responsibly. If you are considering a pedigree, use a registry’s own current information and ask for relevant records rather than relying on appearance or promises.
What a cat breed means
A pedigreed cat has ancestry recorded under a cat registry’s rules. Registration and pedigree paperwork document lineage; they do not guarantee health, temperament, or responsible breeding. Cats of mixed or undocumented ancestry are commonly described as domestic shorthair or domestic longhair. Coat patterns such as tabby, calico, and colorpoint describe appearance, not breed.
Breed descriptions are useful starting points, not predictions. Cats Protection emphasizes that individual personality is shaped by more than breed, including socialization and history. TICA recommends asking about a breed’s characteristics and special requirements, such as grooming, activity, and vocalization, and about the individual kitten’s behavior.

How many cat breeds are there?
There is no single worldwide count: registries define and classify breeds differently, and their lists can change. TICA’s directory states that it recognizes 73 breeds, according to The International Cat Association (TICA), accessed 2026. Treat that as TICA’s count, not a universal total.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Registry and current directory | Recognition and classification depend on the registry; check its own current list. |
| Temperament and activity filters | TICA’s directory offers filters including temperament, size, activity level, and grooming. |
| Pedigree and paperwork | Confirm what the registration documents establish, and do not treat them as a health guarantee. |
How to choose the right cat for your lifestyle
Start with the life you can offer rather than a photograph or a breed label. Consider daily time, activity and play, tolerance for vocal behavior, coat care, budget, indoor or outdoor circumstances, and compatibility with children and other pets. Meet the individual animal where possible.
| Factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Activity and time | How much play and interaction can you provide? What will the cat do while you are away? |
| Social needs and temperament | What is known about this cat’s confidence, sociability, and response to household activity? |
| Grooming | Can you keep up with the coat’s care? Cats Protection’s general guidance is daily grooming for long-haired cats and likely weekly grooming for short-haired cats; the individual coat may differ. |
| Household fit | How does the individual respond to children or other animals? Can you provide gradual introductions and safe spaces? |
| Health and welfare | What health concerns are associated with the breed or its physical traits, and what screening or veterinary advice is appropriate? |
| Lifetime costs | Can you budget for food, equipment, grooming, veterinary care, and insurance if appropriate? |
Do not assume that a breed is inherently best for a family or apartment. Ask about the needs of the breed and the individual, then compare those needs with your own home and routine.
Breed tendencies, grooming, and health
Ask breeders what characteristics and special requirements are typical of the breed, including activity, grooming, and vocalization. Cats Protection cautions that breed does not determine personality; socialization and individual history matter. An adult cat may be easier to assess because its personality is more established than a kitten’s.

- Overall size:22.44"x13.78“x39.37"H. The big base board can increase cat tree's stability. Notice: Please try to place it against the wall.
- High quality faux fur, natural sisal posts durable for long time scratch.
- The hanging ball can provide cats lot of fun, also can be replaced.
- The big condo can provide cats sleeping and observe place. The round, soft platform lets cats observe their surroundings like royalty and enjoy the view outside the window.
- The hanging hammock is a cozy spot for cats to relax and sleep. And it can be removed and washable.
Coat care varies. Cats Protection’s general guidance is that long-haired cats need grooming once a day to prevent matting, while short-haired cats will likely need grooming once a week. Ask about the particular cat’s coat and grooming tolerance.
Research breed-related health concerns before deciding. Cats Protection advises avoiding breeds with extreme features and describes the Scottish Fold folded-ear trait as resulting from a cartilage abnormality associated with painful joint disease. Its veterinary guidance also discusses welfare concerns linked to short legs, flat faces, hairlessness, very short or absent tails, and wildcat hybrids. The exact effect can vary by individual; discuss relevant concerns with a veterinarian and do not treat a breed label as a diagnosis.
International Cat Care recommends asking about inherited problems, parental health and tests, registration, and supporting paperwork. Records can inform a decision, but neither a breeder’s assurance nor a test guarantees a healthy lifetime.
Should you adopt or buy a pedigree kitten?
Adoption is an option if you are open to a mixed-breed cat or have not settled on a breed. Cats Protection says adoption teams try to match cats with suitable owners. Ask what the shelter or rescue knows about the cat’s behavior and history; an adult cat may offer a more established personality than a kitten.

Costs to consider
Cats Protection gives a UK purchase range of £200 to well over £1,000 for registered pedigrees (Cats Protection, page accessed 2026). This is a UK-context figure, not a universal current price. Factor in food, toys, bedding, veterinary visits, grooming, possible costly health conditions, and insurance. Cats Protection notes that pedigrees usually cost more to insure than moggies; compare policy terms and exclusions.
Responsible pedigree-buyer checklist
- Research the breed’s needs, grooming, activity, and known health or welfare concerns before contacting breeders.
- Verify the registry, pedigree, and what the paperwork actually covers.
- Ask what inherited-disease screening has been done and request supporting records for the parents.
- Meet the kitten and, where possible, see its living environment and parents. Ask how the kittens are raised and socialized.
- Get a written agreement and understand its health, registration, and return terms before paying.
- Avoid rushed decisions or payments; take time to verify records and ask questions.
- Discuss breed-specific concerns and records with a veterinarian.
These steps reflect TICA’s buyer guidance and International Cat Care’s checklist. Documentation is useful evidence to consider, not a guarantee of future health.

What is the best cat breed for a family or apartment?
There is no universal best breed for either situation. Consider the household’s routine and the specific cat’s needs and temperament rather than relying on a breed stereotype.
Should I adopt a cat or buy a pedigree kitten?
Adoption can suit people open to mixed-breed cats, and a shelter may help match a cat’s known personality to a home. A pedigree kitten may suit someone seeking documented ancestry who has researched the breed’s requirements. Kittens’ adult personalities are less established than adults’.
How often do cats need grooming?
Cats Protection’s general guidance is daily grooming for long-haired cats to prevent matting and likely weekly grooming for short-haired cats. Ask about the individual cat’s coat and needs.
Does a pedigree or health test guarantee a healthy cat?
No. Pedigree papers document ancestry, and screening can provide relevant information, but neither guarantees lifelong health. Ask for supporting records and discuss breed-specific concerns with a veterinarian.
