Rinse your dog’s muddy paws and lower legs with fresh water before pool time, keep clean drinking water and a towel nearby, and empty the small pool at least once a day. For a small plastic or inflatable kiddie pool, draining and rinsing is the practical cleaning routine—not adding chlorine or bromine.
Set up a simple rinse-and-dry routine
Rinse off mud before your dog gets in
Use fresh water to rinse visible dirt from your dog, especially the paws and lower legs, before pool entry. This is a sensible way to reduce mud in the water, but it is an application of general guidance—not a dog-before-entry procedure specifically tested or prescribed by the sources.
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends rinsing dogs after water activities. Its advice supports rinsing as part of water-play cleanup, rather than establishing that a pre-swim rinse will keep a pool clean. AAHA’s water-safety tips for dogs also recommend offering fresh drinking water so dogs do not drink pool water, and drying them thoroughly after water activities, particularly their paws, skin folds, and ears.
Keep clean water and a towel within reach
Set out fresh drinking water and a towel before play starts. Afterward, dry your dog well, paying particular attention to paws, folds, and ears. This helps finish the cleanup routine and follows AAHA’s dog-specific water-safety advice.

Clean the small pool after play
Small plastic and inflatable pools do not have the filtration and water treatment of a maintained swimming pool. CDC guidance for small pools used by children says to empty the water at least daily, remove debris after emptying, rinse away dirt with fresh water, and let the pool air-dry. Those steps are also a practical fit for a similar small dog pool.
- Remove leaves, dirt, and other visible debris.
- Empty the pool at least once a day.
- Rinse the pool with fresh water to wash away dirt.
- Let it air-dry before filling it again.
CDC’s kiddie-pool guidance, dated June 5, 2024, states: “The water in small inflatable or plastic pools and water slides should be emptied at least daily to help prevent the spread of germs.”

Why chlorine or bromine is not the answer for a small kiddie pool
CDC advises against adding chlorine or bromine to water in small inflatable or plastic pools. These pools generally lack filters, and splashing or spills can quickly lower the water level, making safe disinfectant dosing difficult. Emptying and rinsing are the recommended approach for this small-pool context.
This advice is specific to small pools. Larger inflatable or plastic pools need a filter and should be disinfected according to the manufacturer’s instructions; do not treat that setup as equivalent to a small, frequently emptied kiddie pool.

What to do if there is feces or vomit in the water
Treat feces or vomit as a contamination event, not ordinary mud. Animals can carry germs that contaminate pool water, and fecal matter can spread germs including Cryptosporidium and Giardia. CDC’s detailed small-pool cleanup instructions address child feces or vomit; they are not a dog-specific bleach recipe. Do not improvise a chemical treatment for a dog pool. For contamination or concerns about illness, consult a veterinarian or appropriate public-health guidance, such as CDC’s pool-contamination guidance.

When choosing or arranging a pool area, favor a pool that is straightforward to drain and rinse, and make fresh water convenient to use for paw rinsing and drinking. A towel close to the pool makes drying easier. These are practical considerations based on the routine above, not tested product recommendations.
