Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMany dogs can enjoy supervised play in a shallow kiddie pool, but that is different from swimming—and the pool is not automatically safe just because it is small. Let your dog approach at its own pace, provide a secure way in and out, stay beside it, and prevent repeated drinking. If your dog is frightened, struggling, or unwell, end the session.
Is a kiddie pool swimming or wading?
A shallow kiddie pool is usually best treated as a place to wade, splash, or cool off, not as proof that a dog can swim safely. Dogs differ in their comfort around water, and a slippery bottom can make some reluctant or uneasy. Do not assume every dog knows how to swim or will enjoy being in the pool.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) suggests a kiddie or dog pool as an option for some dogs that do not take to swimming. If your dog avoids the water, looks afraid, or repeatedly tries to leave, stop and choose another way to cool down.
How to introduce your dog to the pool
- Choose a stable spot. Set the pool on a level surface where it cannot tip or shift easily.
- Start shallow. Add only a little water at first and let your dog investigate and enter voluntarily.
- Make entry positive. If your dog is comfortable, use praise or a toy to encourage exploration. Never push or throw a hesitant dog into the water.
- End the session if your dog wants out. Avoid turning the pool into a struggle; a dog that does not enjoy it should not be made to stay.
AKC notes that some dogs are wary of slippery pool surfaces. It suggests kennel decking or a rubber drainage mat to improve traction. These are possible options, not universally suitable or tested solutions; make sure any material lies securely and does not create a new hazard.

Supervise continuously and make the exit obvious
Stay attentive and close enough to help throughout the session. A dog can tire, panic, or have trouble finding a way out, and being able to paddle does not mean it can escape safely. Make sure the dog can leave without climbing a steep or slippery wall. For a larger pool, teach it where the steps or other exit are and supervise it there, too. AKC emphasizes direct supervision and learning pool exits.
Keep pool water and chemicals out of reach
Put a bowl of fresh drinking water beside the pool and discourage your dog from repeatedly drinking pool water. According to AKC, small amounts of water from a properly maintained chlorinated pool are generally not harmful to most dogs, but larger amounts can irritate the digestive tract. Water intoxication is uncommon, but can occur after drinking excessive water from any source.

Keep dogs away during pool shock treatment until the water chemistry is safe. Store chlorine tablets where pets cannot reach them. AKC Chief Veterinarian Dr. Jerry Klein warns that the tablets—not the negligible amount of chlorine in a pool—are the key toxic concern if a dog gets into them.
Contact a veterinarian immediately if your dog develops signs such as vomiting, lethargy, bloating, loss of coordination, restlessness, drooling, pale gums, dilated pupils, or glazed eyes after drinking water. These signs warrant urgent veterinary advice; they are not enough to diagnose the cause at home.

Reduce heat and chlorine irritation
Offer shade and breaks during hot weather, and do not let pool play replace access to fresh water. After time in a chlorinated pool, AKC recommends rinsing your dog’s coat with fresh water and gently drying its ears.
Choose a pool that suits your dog
AKC recommends a hard plastic outdoor wading pool for hot-weather use. A plastic children’s pool may invite digging and tearing, so do not assume every kiddie pool will hold up to a dog’s size or behavior. Consider whether the pool stays stable, whether your dog can enter and exit easily, and whether the bottom provides secure footing. A dog pool or sturdy plastic wading pool is a straightforward option, but no particular product is established here as dog-proof.

A fitted canine life jacket may be useful for a dog swimming in a larger pool or open water, especially if it is not a strong swimmer. It does not replace close supervision and is not usually central to shallow wading-pool play.
