Pause and observe before you pick up a duckling. A duckling alone may be temporarily separated from its family, and a parent may be nearby. If you know where its mother and siblings are and the duckling is not injured, place it close to them and watch quietly from a distance. Contact a wildlife rehabilitator promptly if it is injured or sick, is rejected, or appears truly orphaned.
First, check whether the duckling is really alone
Keep your distance and give the parent a chance to return. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommends observing wildlife from a safe distance. Approaching, chasing, or handling the duckling right away can disturb it and may make it harder for its family to reunite.
If you know where the family is, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends placing the duckling close to its siblings and within hearing range of its parent. Then move away and watch to see whether it rejoins the brood and is accepted. If the parent rejects it, retrieve it and contact a wildlife rehabilitator.
There is no single duckling-specific waiting period established by these sources. Connecticut DEEP gives general advice to watch from a distance for several hours when orphaning is suspected, while Washington’s duckling-specific guidance is to observe after placing a separated duckling near its known family. Follow advice from a local rehabilitator when available, and do not delay help if the bird is injured or visibly ill.

When to call a wildlife rehabilitator
Contact a wildlife rehabilitator if the duckling is injured, visibly sick, attacked by a cat or dog, rejected after a reunion attempt, or truly alone with no parent available. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife lists drooping wings, shivering, lethargy, and predator attack among reasons to seek immediate rehabilitation help. Toronto Wildlife Centre advises treating a duckling found alone with no parents nearby as an orphan.
Call before transporting the bird. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advises confirming that the rehabilitator can care for that species and arranging the handoff in advance. If the parent is known to be dead, Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources directs finders to a licensed rehabilitator; that possession rule applies in Michigan and should not be assumed to describe the law elsewhere. For local requirements, contact your wildlife agency or a rehabilitator.

How to keep a duckling safe while help is arranged
If the duckling must be retrieved, keep handling brief and calm. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends a well-ventilated container lined with a clean soft cloth that is not terry cloth, or with paper towels. Keep the container in a warm, quiet, dark place. The agency describes placing one end of the container on a heating pad set to its lowest setting, or putting a warm—not hot—rice heat pack next to the bird if a pad is unavailable. Follow the rehabilitator’s directions if they differ.
Do not give the duckling food or water while waiting for help or transporting it unless a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian specifically tells you to. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research give this instruction; Toronto Wildlife Centre likewise prioritizes warmth and a dark, quiet place over feeding or watering.

Why not raise it at home?
A wild duckling needs care from people qualified to rehabilitate wildlife, not an improvised home-rearing setup. Carolina Wildlife Center says orphaned ducklings and goslings should be rehabilitated with birds of the same species and similar age to reduce imprinting or socializing to humans. Keep the bird contained only as needed and arrange professional care rather than trying to raise it yourself.
