Home care is appropriate only for a few small, loose tangles that ease out gently. If the skin may be injured or infected, or your dog is in significant pain, contact a veterinarian.
Why a neglected coat needs careful handling
Matting is more than a cosmetic problem. Mats pull on the skin, trap moisture and debris, and can cause irritation or infection. Severe mats may hide wounds or constrict tissue. What looks like a small knot on the surface can sit close to the skin, where brushing or cutting can hurt your dog.
There is no single rule that makes every neglected coat safe to handle at home. The right choice depends on how tight and extensive the mats are, the condition of the skin, where the mats sit, and how calmly your dog can be handled.
When home grooming is reasonable
At home, limit detangling to a few small, loose tangles that yield without pain or resistance. Veterinary-authored guidance from PetMD recommends gently loosening strands with your fingers, then using a wide-tooth comb or slicker brush if needed. Work in short, gentle strokes from the outer part of the tangle toward the skin, and take breaks.

Stop as soon as the knot resists, your dog shows stress or discomfort, or you find that the mat is tight or close to the skin. A comb or grooming product does not make a severe mat safe to remove at home. Do not try to shave or clip a severely matted coat without appropriate training.
When to stop and call for help
Stop home attempts and contact a professional if a mat is tight against the skin, covers a significant area, will not loosen with gentle brushing, or is near the eyes, ears, genitals, or anus. Crying, snapping, or resistance are also reasons to stop rather than hold your dog still and continue.

Contact a veterinarian if you notice redness, swelling, moisture, odor, discharge, a wound, or notable pain around a mat. Veterinary care is especially important for severe pain, impaired movement, suspected infection, or a tight mat or band around a limb. If a tangled coat needs bathing, leave that to a professional: VCA Animal Hospitals warns that tangles can become harder to remove after bathing.
Choosing a professional groomer or veterinarian
Choose an experienced groomer for difficult but non-medical mats
A groomer is a sensible choice for mats that are tight, extensive, resistant, near sensitive areas, or difficult to handle safely at home. Ask the groomer to assess the coat before agreeing on a style. A short clip may be necessary to remove mats safely, even if you hoped to preserve more length; comfort and safe access to the skin take priority.

Before the appointment, discuss the likely change in coat length, how your dog will be handled, and what the groomer will do if your dog becomes distressed or a skin problem is found. The Canine and Feline Sector Group’s 2025 guidance emphasizes that handling and equipment can affect animal welfare during grooming. This is UK-sector best-practice guidance, not a universal legal requirement; local qualifications and practices vary.
Involve a veterinarian when health or safe handling is a concern
A veterinarian should assess extensive matting when the skin may be damaged, there are signs of irritation or infection, your dog has significant pain, or grooming cannot be done safely. Some cases need medically supported clipping. A veterinarian may consider sedation or anesthesia when appropriate to reduce stress or pain; that is an individual clinical decision, not something to attempt at home.

Do not cut a mat with household scissors. Mats can lie very close to the skin, and a sudden movement can turn an attempted trim into a serious cut. If a mat needs to be clipped off, have a trained professional assess it; seek veterinary help if skin injury or pain is suspected. The American Kennel Club also cautions against untrained clipping and scissors in its home-grooming guidance.

Build a maintenance routine after the coat is comfortable
Once the immediate problem is resolved, agree on a routine that fits your dog’s coat, age, health, behavior, and your ability to keep up with it. Regular home brushing can complement professional appointments; it is not a substitute for veterinary care when skin problems or pain are present.
Check high-friction areas regularly: behind the ears, under the legs and around the armpits, around collars or harnesses, between the toes, and around the tail and hindquarters. VCA notes that long, silky, or curly coats may need daily brushing, particularly behind the ears, in the armpits, and on the backs of the legs; short coats may need less. Ask your veterinarian or groomer to tailor the schedule to your dog rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all interval. A wide-tooth dog comb can help with routine maintenance or a minor loose tangle, but it is not a remedy for tight, painful, or widespread mats.
