How to Stop a Dog From Chasing or Scaring a New Kitten

Prevent chasing with a kitten-safe room, gradual introductions, supervised leash sessions, and ongoing separation whenever you cannot actively supervise.

Keep your new kitten and dog physically separated whenever you cannot actively supervise. Start with a dog-free safe room for the kitten, then introduce their scents, allow brief visual contact through a secure barrier, and move to short leash-controlled sessions only while both animals remain calm. If your dog has chased and caught small animals before, or cannot be interrupted once chasing starts, keep them apart and ask your veterinarian about a veterinary behaviorist.

How do I stop my dog from chasing my new kitten?

Prevent access before trying to correct the behavior. Chasing can be strongly motivated for some dogs, so repeated opportunities to chase are not a safe training plan. Keep the kitten behind a secure barrier or in a separate room, and use a leash during early sessions. Do not rely on yelling or punishment to stop a chase; train and reward a different response, such as turning toward you, coming when called, or settling.

Practice that response away from the kitten first. Once your dog can respond reliably, reward the dog for checking in with you or settling while the kitten is visible at a distance. If the dog fixates, lunges, or cannot disengage, increase distance and end the session rather than testing whether the dog will stop.

How do I introduce a kitten to a dog safely?

Set up a dog-free safe room

Give the kitten a room or secure area where the dog cannot enter and where the kitten can eat, sleep, use the litter box, hide, and climb. Keep feeding and sleeping areas separate during the transition. A gate or other sturdy barrier can help with controlled visual contact, but check that it is secure for these animals and does not leave the kitten trapped without an escape route. VCA recommends safe zones and gradual exposure when preparing a home for a kitten (VCA kitten preparation guidance).

Start with scent, then a barrier

  1. Let each pet explore the other’s area separately, without meeting. Exchange bedding or cloths carrying their scent. Do not force the kitten to approach the dog.
  2. For first visual contact, keep the dog leashed and the kitten free to retreat behind the barrier. Keep the session brief and reward the dog for calm behavior and attention to you.
  3. If either animal becomes agitated, increase distance or end the session. Try again later at an easier level rather than pushing through distress.

Try brief shared-space sessions only when both are calm

After calm barrier sessions, you can try a short supervised session in an open area. Keep the dog leashed and make sure the kitten has an escape route. Reward the dog for settling and disengaging from the kitten. Increase session length gradually, guided by the animals’ behavior—not a preset schedule. VCA’s guidance on moving with a dog and kitten introductions supports gradual, managed introductions.

Will my dog ever be safe around my kitten?

There is no guarantee that training will make every dog safe around a cat. A history of chasing and catching small animals is a serious warning: VCA notes that some dogs with this history may never be safe around cats. The same caution applies if your dog lunges at the kitten or is difficult to interrupt once chasing begins. Keep the animals separated and consult your veterinarian about a veterinary behaviorist if any of these apply. VCA’s advice is available in its guidance on moving with your dog.

For lower-risk introductions, the practical question is whether the dog can stay calm and respond to cues, the kitten can retreat to safety, and an adult can supervise every interaction. If those conditions are not in place, use physical separation rather than allowing contact.

How long should I keep them separated?

There is no universal introduction timeline established in the veterinary guidance cited here. Keep them apart whenever nobody can actively supervise, and advance from scent to barrier viewing to leashed contact only as their behavior allows. If either animal is distressed, return to more distance or an earlier step. Continue separation and seek professional advice if the dog cannot be safely interrupted or the kitten cannot reliably reach a safe retreat.

Give the kitten safe outlets for play

Wand and other movable toys give a kitten a safe way to stalk and pounce. Play enrichment does not replace managing the dog’s access: the animals still need separation and supervised introductions. See VCA’s guidance on bringing home a new kitten.
