Choose a room that can be securely separated
Pick a quiet room where the kitten can rest without the dog entering or reaching inside. A bedroom or other calm space can work if it has a door that closes and can remain shut. Avoid rooms with frequent traffic or loud activity where possible.
A baby gate can help manage access, but it is not a substitute for a closed door when the kitten needs full separation. Check whether your particular dog could jump over, push through, or reach around the gate, and whether the kitten could slip out. The Humane Society of the United States describes a door or baby gate for allowing pets to get to know a newcomer while separated; it does not prescribe a gate type or dimensions. Stock the room with the kitten’s essentials
Set up the room before bringing the kitten home so its basic needs are available from the start. Place food and fresh water where they are easy to reach, and keep the litter box in a quiet, accessible spot, separated from the food and water as much as the room allows.

Pet-proof the room at kitten height
Before the kitten enters, inspect the space from its point of view. A kitten can squeeze into small spaces, chew exposed items, or climb where an adult cat might not. Secure electrical cords and windows, close cabinets and drawers, and block gaps where the kitten could become trapped or reach an unsafe area.

- Remove or securely store medications, cleaning products, and pest-control products.
- Remove poisonous plants and other objects the kitten could chew or swallow.
- Secure cords and check windows, screens, and other openings.
- Close cabinets and drawers; check behind furniture and appliances for unsafe gaps.

Keep the kitten in its home-base room at first, with the door closed and its essentials in place. As it becomes comfortable, you can gradually allow access to other rooms while keeping some doors shut and ensuring the dog cannot enter the kitten’s protected space. The ASPCA recommends a home-base room and gradual access to other rooms in its moving-with-pets guidance.

There is no reliable number of days that establishes when a kitten and dog are ready for direct contact. The cited guidance supports separation and gradual settling, not a complete dog–kitten introduction sequence or behavior thresholds for each stage. If you have safety concerns or either animal is distressed, ask your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional for case-specific advice rather than relying on a fixed timetable.
