A dog who is worried around other dogs may show quiet signs of discomfort before barking or lunging: turning away, lowering their body, tucking their tail, trembling, freezing, or repeatedly scanning the area. Look at the whole dog and the situation, not one signal in isolation. If your dog seems uncomfortable, calmly create space and do not force a greeting.
What signs can mean a dog is uncomfortable around other dogs?
Fear can look like avoidance, stillness, or defensive behavior. Watch for a change in posture or behavior as another dog approaches, and consider several cues together. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) lists these among possible, nonspecific signs of anxiety or distress:
- Turning the head or body away, or disengaging socially.
- Lowering the head or neck, crouching, or holding the body unusually low.
- Tucking the tail or lowering the ears.
- Scanning, appearing hypervigilant, or repeatedly checking the surroundings.
- Shifting weight between legs or lifting a paw.
- Changes in eating or drinking, reactivity, or aggression.
These are observations, not a checklist that confirms fear. A dog’s normal posture, health, and immediate surroundings all matter. For example, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) describes a crouched, trembling dog as showing recognizable fear cues, but also cautions that body language must be read as a whole and in context.
Fear may be quiet—or look defensive
A dog who freezes, retreats, or turns away may be uncomfortable without making a sound. Another dog may stiffen or stare hard when tense. Those cues call for caution and more space, but they do not by themselves explain the dog’s motivation.

Barking or lunging is not proof on its own that a dog is afraid, friendly, or aggressive. The useful question in the moment is whether the dog’s posture and behavior suggest the interaction is becoming uncomfortable or unsafe—not what label to assign from one reaction.
Compare the whole interaction, not just the tail
AVSAB describes loose, wiggly body tone and a soft, open mouth in some friendly greetings. A stiff posture and hard stare are different reasons to pause and create space. Tail movement alone does not establish that a greeting is welcome.

What to do when your dog seems scared on a walk
Give your dog room to move away. Increase distance from the other dog, change direction, or use a route that avoids a close encounter. Do not insist on a greeting or keep your dog near the trigger once they appear distressed.
If your dog is afraid of other dogs, Cornell University’s guidance on fearful dogs advises avoiding dog parks and other predictable situations where dogs may run loose, charge, or approach fences. AVSAB’s management guidance also recommends planning routes and timing, watching for triggers, and using distance to help a dog feel safe.

Distance is individual: there is no universal number of feet that makes every dog comfortable. AAHA’s recommendation to keep dogs at least 1–1.5 body lengths apart applies to the veterinary setting, not as a fixed minimum for every walk.

Management and gradual training work together. Avoiding overwhelming encounters protects your dog’s sense of safety; carefully planned exposure can help build a more positive association over time.

Use gradual exposure and rewards
Cornell describes introducing a dog to other dogs gradually, at a level that does not trigger fear, while pairing the experience with something the dog values, such as a high-value treat. Go at your dog’s pace: if they become distressed, increase distance or end the exposure rather than trying to make them endure it.
AVSAB recommends reward-based methods for dog training, including behavior problems, and says aversive methods should not be used. Its current position statements page and 2021 humane dog training position statement discuss reward-based training and the role of environmental management and behavior modification. For a dog with serious fear or anxiety, the 2021 statement notes that medication may be part of care in some cases; it is not necessary or appropriate for every fearful dog.

Get individual guidance when needed
A qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behavior professional can help tailor the pace and setup to your dog. Food rewards may be useful, but they do not replace space, careful management, or professional advice when the problem is persistent or difficult to manage safely.
When to talk with a veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian if fear around other dogs is serious, difficult to manage safely, or has appeared suddenly. AVSAB advises veterinary evaluation for a sudden behavior change; do not assume a new reaction is only a training issue. Its guidance on sudden behavior changes explains why a veterinary conversation may be warranted. A veterinarian can assess the situation and advise whether referral to a qualified behavior professional is appropriate.
