Introduce a kitten and dog in stages: give the kitten a secure room, let them get used to each other’s scent, then try brief visual meetings through a barrier. Move to short, supervised contact with the dog on leash only when both animals appear relaxed. Keep them apart whenever you cannot supervise.

Before the first meeting: set up a kitten-only room

Choose a quiet room the dog cannot enter. Set it up with the kitten’s food, water, litter box, bedding, toys, and a place to hide. This gives the kitten a safe retreat while settling in. Keep the pets’ feeding and sleeping areas separate at first.

Before face-to-face contact, let the kitten adjust to the room and its new surroundings. There is no fixed number of days to wait; readiness depends on how both animals respond.

Introduce their scent before their sight

Use separate towels to rub each pet, or exchange bedding and toys so they can investigate the other’s scent at their own pace. Repeat this step until neither animal seems unsettled by the scent. Do not bring them together or force them to approach the scented item.

Let them explore shared areas separately

Once both are comfortable with the scent exchange, let each animal explore shared spaces while the other is safely confined elsewhere. This allows them to learn about one another’s presence without having to interact.

Begin visual meetings through a secure barrier

Use a sturdy gate, screen, or another secure barrier that prevents the dog from reaching the kitten. Keep the first sessions brief. Reward calm behavior, and end the session if either animal becomes distressed or overly excited. A barrier is useful only if it reliably keeps them apart; do not rely on one the dog can push through or jump over.

Move to short, supervised contact

When both animals remain relaxed during barrier sessions, try a brief meeting with the dog on a short leash. Make sure the kitten can retreat, climb, or hide without being cornered. Let the kitten choose whether to come closer; do not hold it in place or carry it toward the dog.

Keep early meetings short and increase their length and frequency gradually, as long as both animals stay relaxed. Continue to reward calm behavior. If either animal shows distress, return to the previous stage and give them more time before trying again.

How long should you keep the kitten separated?

Keep the kitten in its secure room when the dog cannot be supervised, and keep the animals separated whenever nobody can watch them. Do not use a calendar as a readiness test: kitten-specific guidance gives behavioral cues, not a universal number of days or meetings. VCA describes gradual cat introductions over approximately two weeks in separate guidance, but that is an example—not a guaranteed timeline for introducing a kitten to a dog.

Do not leave them together unattended until repeated supervised interactions have gone well and both animals are reliably relaxed around each other. If you are unsure whether they are ready, continue separating them when you cannot supervise.

When to slow down and get individual advice

A dog that has chased cats, shown aggression, or fixated intensely on a kitten needs extra caution. Keep the animals separated and consult a veterinarian or qualified animal behavior professional for advice specific to your dog and household. General introduction steps cannot establish that a particular dog is safe around a kitten.

Preserve the kitten’s private refuge and escape options throughout the process. For a home with multiple cats, VCA’s rule of thumb is one litter box per cat plus one extra; this concerns cats’ access to litter resources, not a requirement for introducing a kitten to a dog.
