1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCrate training works best when a puppy learns that the crate is a comfortable place to rest—not a place where it is suddenly shut away. Start with the door open, build positive associations, and add brief confinement and out-of-sight practice only while your puppy stays relaxed. Crate comfort and learning to be alone are related, but separate skills; a crate is optional, and it is not a treatment for separation anxiety.
Set up the crate as a place your puppy can choose
Place the crate in a room where the household spends time. Secure the door open so it cannot swing shut unexpectedly, then let your puppy investigate at its own pace. Toss treats beside the crate and gradually farther inside, or offer a favorite toy if food is not appealing. Keep early sessions short: the RSPCA suggests about three minutes, and some puppies need several sessions or days before they enter comfortably. RSPCA crate-training guidance
Do not push or carry a reluctant puppy into the crate. Reward voluntary steps toward it, and let the puppy leave again. The goal at this stage is a positive association, not a closed door.
Build comfort before closing the door
When your puppy willingly goes inside, begin serving meals near the entrance and gradually move the bowl toward the back over successive meals. If the puppy is hesitant, leave the bowl outside at first and move it inward only as comfort grows.

Once your puppy eats comfortably inside, close the door during a meal and open it as soon as the puppy finishes. Increase closed-door time in small increments, staying nearby. The RSPCA describes gradually building toward roughly ten minutes after eating; treat that as guidance, not a required target. If your puppy shows distress, return to an easier open-door step rather than waiting for it to endure a longer session. RSPCA crate-training guidance
Add distance and out-of-sight practice gradually
After your puppy is relaxed with the door closed while you are nearby, offer a safe chew or food toy and sit beside the crate. Then step out of sight briefly and come back calmly. Repeat, extending the interval only while your puppy remains settled. Practice at different times of day, and keep departures and returns low-key.
The RSPCA describes working toward about half an hour of out-of-sight practice before moving on to short absences. This is a progression target, not a minimum every puppy must meet or a guarantee that a puppy is ready to be left alone for that long. Let your puppy’s behavior set the pace. Meet your puppy’s needs and choose a suitable space
Before a short absence, give your puppy an appropriate opportunity to toilet and exercise suited to its age and health. Provide comfortable bedding, access to water, and only chew or enrichment items that are safe for that puppy. Do not use confinement to make up for unmet needs.
The crate should let your puppy stand, turn around, lie down, and stretch out. A divider can make a larger crate suitable as a puppy grows. If your puppy struggles with a crate, a large pet-proof exercise pen—or arranging care with a pet sitter—may be a better option. Read distress as a cue to make the exercise easier
A puppy crying in a crate is not necessarily seeking attention. It may need a toilet break, feel frightened, or be finding the training step too difficult. Watch for signs such as:

- Whining or persistent vocalizing
- Panting, salivation, or cowering
- Excessive barking, aggression, or escape attempts
- Being unable to settle
The RSPCA lists whining, panting, excessive barking, cowering, and aggression among signs that the duration may have increased too quickly. VCA also identifies persistent vocalizing, salivation, escape attempts, or failure to settle as reasons to consult a veterinarian before continuing. RSPCA crate-training guidance; VCA Animal Hospitals on crate training and confinement
If a brief quiet moment occurs, you can open the door then, but do not leave a panicking puppy confined in the hope that it will stop. Check whether it needs to toilet, return to a step it can handle, and reassess the plan if distress persists.
Crate training is not separation-anxiety treatment
A dog’s ability to relax in a crate does not prove it is comfortable home alone. The University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine cautions that crating a dog with separation anxiety may prevent destruction without reducing the anxiety, and may make it worse. If your puppy panics in the crate, do not respond by extending confinement; discuss the behavior with a veterinarian and ask about qualified behavior support. A different safe management area may be more appropriate. UC Davis guidance on crate training and separation anxiety

Practice being alone separately: begin with short periods and increase them gradually, stopping before distress. The RSPCA recommends occasional video monitoring because signs such as trembling, pacing, or whining may not be apparent when you are away. These are general alone-time recommendations, not a promise that a crate suits every puppy. RSPCA puppy-care guidance; RSPCA guidance on teaching dogs to stay home alone
Keep the crate a positive option rather than a punishment or a way to suppress unwanted behavior. The RSPCA says: “Crates must never be used as a punishment or to prevent unwanted behaviours such as destruction of furniture.” RSPCA crate-training guidance
