A puppy can sleep in a crate near its owner—these are not competing choices. A bedroom crate or pen can let a puppy rest in a defined, safe space while keeping it close enough for you to hear overnight needs. The right setup is the one your puppy can settle in comfortably, introduced gradually, with a plan for toilet breaks.
Can a puppy sleep in a crate in your bedroom?
Yes. VCA Animal Hospitals says a crate or pen may be kept in the bedroom for nighttime sleep. This can be a practical starting arrangement if your puppy is new to your home: it offers a designated sleeping space while making it easier to notice when the puppy wakes and may need to go outside. VCA’s crate-training guidance treats bedroom placement as an option, not a rule that every household must follow.
There is no established best location for every puppy. The guidance reviewed does not show that sleeping near an owner prevents separation anxiety, or that sleeping alone causes it. Choose based on whether your puppy can rest calmly, whether the space is safe, and whether you can respond to toileting needs.

Compare the options by your puppy’s comfort and your household’s ability to keep the sleeping area safe and respond overnight—not by assuming one arrangement is right for all dogs.

How to introduce a crate without forcing it
Crate training should build comfort in small steps. The crate should be a place the puppy can enter willingly and rest, not a space used to make it endure fear. RSPCA UK puts the goal plainly: “Your dog’s crate should be a place where they feel secure, safe and comfortable.” See RSPCA UK’s crate-training guidance.
- Make the crate inviting. Leave the door open and let the puppy explore. Use treats or meals to create a positive association; do not push the puppy inside.
- Practise brief sessions. Once the puppy is comfortable entering, close the door for a short time, then open it while the puppy remains calm. Gradually extend the duration at a pace the puppy tolerates.
- Use the same approach at bedtime. Settle the puppy in the crate after positive daytime practice rather than making bedtime the first prolonged confinement session.
- Adjust if the puppy struggles. If distress escalates, stop the session and change the plan rather than expecting the puppy to simply get used to it.
VCA’s confinement-training guidance also supports gradual, positive introduction. A suitable crate lets the puppy stand without hitting its head, turn around, lie down, and stretch out. Check the fit as the puppy grows.

What to do if your puppy cries at night
Crying can have different causes: your puppy may need to toilet, may have had too much crate time too soon, or may be seriously distressed. Respond to what is happening rather than treating every sound as either a toilet request or something to ignore.
- If the puppy may need to eliminate: Take it outside calmly and briefly. Praise it for going, then return to the sleeping area.
- If the puppy is unsettled but not escalating: Check whether the crate session was too long or the setup is unfamiliar. Make the next practice session shorter and easier.
- If distress is severe or getting worse: End the session and contact your veterinarian or a qualified veterinary behavior professional for guidance.
Young puppies commonly need nighttime toilet breaks until they can hold their bladder and bowels through the night. Do not assume a puppy should sleep uninterrupted by a particular age. The American Kennel Club’s crate-training advice and guidance on crate accidents discuss toileting and accidents; frequent accidents, especially alongside other symptoms, merit a conversation with your veterinarian.

How to choose a safe, comfortable sleeping area
- Make sure the puppy can stand, turn, lie down, and stretch without restriction.
