For many dogs, sleeping under the covers is safe if they can get out easily and stay cool and comfortable. The main concerns are getting trapped, overheating, breathing difficulty, chewing or swallowing fabric, and getting tangled in damaged bedding. Make sure your dog has a clear exit, and avoid electric blankets for dogs that burrow.
Why do dogs crawl under the covers?
Dogs may burrow for warmth, a dark, den-like place, a feeling of security, or closeness to their person. The behavior alone does not show that a dog is sick or anxious. If your dog seems to be hiding because of fear, focus on the cause of that fear and consider guidance from a qualified trainer or animal behavior professional. The American Kennel Club (AKC) discusses these possible motivations.
How to make under-cover sleeping safer
- Keep an easy exit open. Your dog should be able to move out from under the bedding without help. Avoid heavy covers and sheets tucked so tightly that the dog cannot get free. AKC and PetMD both identify entrapment as a concern.
- Use light, breathable bedding. Avoid weighted blankets. Take away blankets your dog chews or ones with holes, loose threads, or damaged areas: swallowed fabric can cause choking or intestinal blockage, and entanglement can injure a dog. PetMD outlines these bedding hazards.
- Do not use an electric blanket for a burrowing dog. Scratching and digging can add risk. AKC’s guidance on dogs sleeping under covers advises against electric blankets in this situation.
- Watch for heat and breathing trouble. Heavy panting and drooling can be early signs of overheating; difficulty breathing, weakness, confusion, seizures, or collapse are severe warning signs. Be especially cautious if your dog has a short muzzle, excess weight, is older, or has an underlying heart or breathing problem. Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center describes heatstroke signs and risk factors.
When to contact a veterinarian urgently
If your dog is struggling to breathe, continues to pant or drool excessively, becomes weak or confused, vomits, has a seizure, or collapses, move the dog to a cooler environment and contact a veterinary hospital urgently. Cornell describes heatstroke as a life-threatening emergency; apparent improvement after cooling does not mean veterinary assessment is unnecessary. Safer alternatives if your dog gets too warm or trapped
Place an ordinary dog bed nearby so your dog has a separate place to sleep. If your dog wants something cozy, offer a designated lightweight, breathable dog blanket that is intact and does not pose a chewing or entanglement risk. These are practical options, not required purchases for every dog. AKC’s article on heated dog beds quotes veterinarian Dr. Klein recommending supervised use of heated beds and regular dog beds for overnight sleeping.

There is no established universal blanket-weight, room-temperature, or time limit for under-cover sleeping, and available sources do not provide a rate for injuries, suffocation, or heat illness specifically associated with it. If your dog has a breathing, mobility, or heat-regulation condition, ask your veterinarian for advice tailored to your dog.
