Dogs may sleep under the blanket with you because the covers feel warm and comfortable, the sheltered space feels secure, or they want to be close to you. The behavior alone does not reveal one definite motive or mean your dog is anxious or ill. If your dog can get out easily and stays comfortable, sharing a lightweight, breathable blanket is generally reasonable.
Why dogs burrow under the covers
Warmth
A blanket holds warmth, which can appeal to a dog in a cool room or one with a short coat. The American Kennel Club (AKC) notes temperature as one possible reason dogs crawl under covers.
Comfort and security
Some dogs appear to enjoy the snug, sheltered feeling of a blanket. PetMD describes blankets as a potential source of warmth and security for pets. A dark, tucked-in space may also feel den-like; Vetstreet discusses this as one plausible explanation, not a proven cause for any individual dog.
Closeness to you
Your dog may simply want to be near you. Companionship is another possible explanation for crawling under the covers, but the behavior by itself cannot tell you exactly what your dog is seeking.

Is it safe for a dog to sleep under a blanket?
PetMD’s veterinarian-authored guidance says ordinary blankets are generally aerated enough that suffocation is not a concern for most dogs. That is not a guarantee for every dog or every blanket: overheating and getting tangled are still concerns. - Uncover your dog if it pants, seems restless, or appears too warm.
- Make sure the blanket is loose enough that your dog cannot become trapped or tangled.
- Do not leave a dog alone with a heated blanket, and do not give pets weighted blankets, as PetMD advises against both.
If your dog seems distressed or the blanket-seeking begins suddenly alongside other concerning changes, ask your veterinarian for advice. The behavior alone is not enough to diagnose anxiety, a breathing problem, or illness.

How to offer a different sleeping spot
If sharing the covers disrupts your sleep or does not work for your household, offer a comfortable alternative and guide your dog toward it calmly. The AKC suggests teaching a dog to settle on top of the covers, such as at the foot of the bed, or making a designated place comfortable. A separate bed—including a covered or cubby-style bed if your dog likes sheltered spaces—may also be worth trying. A blanket or bed is optional, not a treatment or a guaranteed fix.
