Why daily grooming matters for a long-haired cat
Long fur is more prone to tangling and matting, so regular brushing or combing helps catch knots before they become harder to manage. How to include the tail in the routine
During the daily grooming session, gently check the tail along with the rest of the coat. Work slowly and watch for small tangles or clumps rather than repeatedly brushing one spot regardless of your cat’s response. This is a practical way to apply whole-coat daily guidance; the sources do not specify a separate tail-only interval.
Choose a tool your cat tolerates
A long-toothed metal comb is a reasonable starting point for a long coat. VCA says long-toothed metal combs or brushes can remove loose hair and smooth minor tangles, while Cats Protection identifies combs as suitable for long-haired cats: Grooming and Coat Care for Your Cat. Use gentle strokes and stop if your cat seems uncomfortable; a tool that your cat accepts is more useful than one that causes distress.

What to do if the tail is matted
Do not pull forcefully at a painful or tight tangle, and do not cut a mat out with scissors. Mats can lie close to the skin, where scissors may injure the cat. Cats Protection specifically warns against brushing out mats close to the skin or cutting them with scissors: Tips for grooming long-haired cats.
Ask a veterinarian or groomer for help if a mat is tight, extensive, painful, or your cat will not tolerate its removal. A coat that is becoming unkempt may also deserve veterinary attention, since pain, obesity, or limited mobility can make self-grooming difficult.
