Ask the patient’s care team or the hospital’s visitor-services staff first: the facility’s policy, the patient’s condition and the unit all matter. For an individual patient’s room, CDC guidance calls for a case-by-case decision made with the attending physician and nursing staff.
Why a hospital may allow or refuse a dog visit
Hospitals do not follow one universal rule for family-pet visits. A facility may permit visits in some circumstances but restrict particular units, rooms, animals or patients. A 2024 survey of 104 U.S. infectious-disease specialists found that 88% reported working at facilities that allowed animal-assisted activities or pet visitation. That is a report about the specialists’ facilities—not the odds that a particular hospital will approve your visit. The survey also found variation in permitted species, restricted areas and veterinary assessments. American Journal of Infection Control survey (2024).
The patient’s health and location matter
Allergies, asthma, immune suppression, isolation precautions and the needs of nearby patients can affect whether a visit is appropriate and where it could happen. CDC guidance notes that facilities may not allow animal visitation for patients with asthma, known animal allergies, respiratory allergies of unknown cause or immunosuppressive disorders. It says animals should not be brought into hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) units or other units housing severely immunosuppressed patients. Some visits involving terminally ill, severely immunosuppressed patients require individual review rather than an assumption that a visit is safe or permitted. Pet visits, therapy-animal programs and service animals are different
A hospital’s animal-assisted therapy or visitation program does not automatically allow a patient’s own dog to visit. CDC distinguishes animal-assisted therapy—a goal-directed intervention incorporated into treatment by a credentialed therapist—from ordinary pet visitation. A program may have its own animal and handler screening process.

A service animal is different from a family pet. CDC defines one as “an animal individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability.” Disability-related service-animal access is subject to different considerations from a request to bring a pet for a visit. What to ask before bringing the dog
Call before traveling with the dog. Ask the care team or visitor-services staff who makes the decision and what arrangements are possible for this patient and unit.

- Does this hospital and this unit allow a family-pet visit right now?
- Who must approve it—the attending clinician, nurse, infection-prevention team or a visitation-program coordinator?
- Could the dog enter the patient’s room, or would the visit need to happen in a designated area?
- Could the patient’s diagnosis, immune status, allergies, asthma, isolation status or treatment make a visit inadvisable?
- What requirements apply to the dog’s health, vaccinations, grooming and behavior, and to the handler, leash or carrier?
- Are there limits on visit length, the number of people present or contact with other patients?
- What should the handler do if the dog has an accident, scratches or bites someone, or another patient reacts?
These are questions to ask, not standard requirements that apply at every hospital. Policies and restrictions vary by facility.
How to reduce risks during an approved visit
CDC identifies potential concerns including zoonotic infection, allergens, animal body fluids, bites or scratches, and entry into restricted patient-care areas. It recommends hand hygiene after animal contact and a risk assessment for animal-assisted sessions. Facilities should use an infection-control risk assessment to help determine whether a session belongs in a public area or an individual room, and follow routine cleaning protocols after sessions. Follow the hospital’s instructions for keeping the dog under control, managing contact and cleaning up. Confirm handling and equipment rules with the facility rather than assuming a particular leash, carrier or other item is required.

Healthcare facilities covered by the ADA or Rehabilitation Act generally must allow a person with a disability to be accompanied by a service animal, subject to individualized limits. A facility may restrict access if the animal poses a direct threat or its presence would fundamentally alter services. Some restricted-access environments—including operating rooms and certain critical-care or protective-environment areas—may exclude service animals when the same access limits apply to people and infection-control barriers cannot reasonably be imposed on the animal.

Staff may ask whether an animal is a service animal required because of a disability. CDC says certification or other documentation cannot be required for access to an area generally open to the public. If a patient must be separated from a service animal, ask the facility what supervision or care arrangements are available during the separation and how it will meet the patient’s needs. The handler remains responsible for the animal’s care; discuss how the rules apply to the individual situation with the facility. CDC: Service Animals in Healthcare Facilities.
