If your dog may need emergency care, call the emergency hospital while getting ready to leave if it is safe and practical—but do not delay urgent care to make the call or collect optional items. Booking, walk-in, and referral rules vary by hospital, so follow the instructions from the facility you plan to visit.
Choose the right service and find out how it accepts patients
For a routine concern or specialist visit, contact the hospital’s appointment desk. Ask about availability, whether a referral is required, how to transfer records, and what to do before the appointment. For urgent symptoms, contact your veterinarian or an emergency hospital for immediate direction.
Emergency arrangements differ. UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital says that appointments are not needed for its Emergency Room, but asks owners to call ahead if possible so staff can be ready. That is UC Davis’s policy, not a rule for every hospital. Check the process at the facility you intend to use.
Do I need to call before bringing my dog in?
For an emergency, call ahead when you can do so without delaying departure or care. Explain what happened, when it happened, your dog’s current condition, and your estimated arrival time. Staff may be able to prepare, advise you on safe transport, or direct you to a more suitable facility. A call is not always required: some emergency services accept walk-ins, while others give specific arrival instructions.

If you are unsure whether your dog’s symptoms are urgent, call a veterinarian for guidance rather than waiting to see whether they pass.
What should I bring to the hospital?
Gather what is readily available; do not hold up an urgent trip to find paperwork. Useful information and items include:

- Your dog’s symptoms, when they began, and how they have changed.
- Medical records and recent test results or imaging, if available.
- Medication names and doses, allergies, and relevant treatment history.
- Your regular veterinarian’s name and contact details.
- If poisoning is possible, the product packaging, a photo, or a sample if it is safe and quick to bring.
Tell the hospital about any suspected toxin exposure, even if you cannot bring the packaging.
How to transport an injured dog safely
A frightened or painful dog may react unpredictably, so protect yourself and handle your dog gently. Keep your dog calm, limit movement, and ask the hospital for transport advice if you can call without delaying care. This is especially important when a serious injury or spinal injury is possible.

- Small dog: A carrier or sturdy box may help. Do not force an injured dog through a small carrier door.
- Larger dog: A firm, rigid surface can serve as a makeshift stretcher. Move your dog gently and, if possible, get help rather than lifting alone.
What to expect at check-in and triage
Describe the symptoms and timeline clearly, and tell staff what happened. Emergency patients may be prioritized by medical need rather than by arrival order. A seriously ill or injured dog may be taken for assessment before registration is complete. Follow staff directions, ask where to wait, and find out how they will provide updates.
Confirm preparation, costs, and other visit details
Ask the hospital about expected waits, estimates, deposits, referral documents, and any preparation such as fasting. These requirements are specific to the facility and visit. For example, Penn Vet says it provides an estimate for hospitalization and requires a deposit at admission; that policy should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Follow the hospital’s instructions about food and medication. If your dog has a condition such as diabetes or needs medication with food, mention it when you call and ask what to do. Do not withhold food or change medication based on a general rule.

Examples of signs or events that veterinary sources identify as emergencies include collapse, severe bleeding, being hit by a vehicle, suspected poisoning, seizures, difficulty giving birth, inability to urinate, heatstroke, major wounds or fractures, penetrating chest or abdominal wounds, and eye injuries. This is not a complete diagnostic checklist. If you are worried or uncertain, contact a veterinarian promptly for direction.

Do not give your dog human pain medication unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. Call for professional guidance rather than trying to treat a potentially urgent problem yourself.
