Newly adopted cats often hide because their surroundings—sounds, smells, people and other animals—are unfamiliar. A quiet, secure room and time to adjust can help; hiding alone does not show that a cat dislikes you or is ill. Pay attention to whether the cat is eating, drinking and using the litter box, and contact a veterinarian if hiding comes with appetite loss, other symptoms or a worsening change.
Why a newly adopted cat may hide
Moving into a home changes a cat’s sensory world all at once. Unfamiliar sounds, scents, people and pets can feel overwhelming, so staying out of sight may help a cat feel safer while it observes. A shy temperament or difficult past experience may also affect how readily a cat explores. Hiding by itself is not a diagnosis, and it does not mean the cat has rejected you.
Hiding can also occur alongside stress or illness. The ASPCA lists hiding and social withdrawal among possible signs of stress or anxiety, along with changes such as not eating, panting, hypervigilance, aggression, dilated pupils or twitching ears or tail. International Cat Care notes that hiding can be one sign of longer-term distress, particularly when paired with changes in play, grooming, toileting, appetite or water intake, or with vomiting or diarrhea. These signs warrant attention; they do not let an owner identify the cause without a veterinarian.
How long might hiding last?
There is no universal deadline for a cat to come out. The ASPCA’s “3-3-3” guideline describes the first three days as a time when an adopted pet may be nervous and overwhelmed, the following three weeks as a period of decompression and settling, and the first three months as a broader adjustment period. It is a rule of thumb, not a clinical standard or a promise that a cat will follow that schedule. ASPCA guidance on shy cats says some need only a few days, while others take longer.

Temperament, past experience, health, household activity and other pets can all shape the transition. Look for gradual changes rather than a particular date: food disappearing when the home is quiet, litter-box use, a little more exploration, or less retreat when someone enters can all be useful observations.
How to help a cat feel safer at home
- Begin with one quiet room. Set up a secure, low-traffic space instead of giving the cat immediate access to a busy home. Keep children and resident pets from crowding the room.
- Make essentials easy to reach. Put food, fresh water and a litter box in the room, along with comfortable, safe places to hide. A hideaway should be easy for the cat to leave. Offer a floor-level option and, where practical, a higher resting place.
- Keep care predictable. Feed and care for the cat on a steady routine. Move calmly, and allow the cat to watch without demanding contact.
- Let the cat choose when to approach. Do not pull the cat out, corner it, force petting or push introductions with people or other animals. As the cat seems more comfortable, allow access to more of the home gradually; slow down if the cat seems overwhelmed.
- Ask about the cat’s history. The shelter or rescue may know the cat’s usual food, past habits, health history or known fears. Arrange veterinary care after adoption.
A cardboard box or other safe, quiet retreat can serve the basic purpose of a hiding place; a covered bed or cat hideaway is optional. A product is not a treatment for anxiety.

When hiding is a reason to call a veterinarian
Consider the cat’s overall condition, not just whether it is visible. When the home is quiet, note whether the cat eats and drinks, urinates and defecates, moves normally, grooms, and shows any interest in exploring or playing. Concerning changes include reduced food or water intake, less play, altered grooming, toileting outside the litter box, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or a sudden change in behavior.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if the cat stops eating, develops unusual physical or behavioral symptoms, or appears to be getting worse. ASPCA general cat-care guidance advises veterinary care if anorexia, diarrhea, vomiting or lethargy persist for more than two days; its behavior guidance says a cat that stops eating or shows unusual symptoms should be seen right away. Do not wait two days if the cat is not eating, is very young or medically vulnerable, seems weak, or is acutely unwell.

Seek emergency veterinary care for life-threatening signs such as trouble breathing, seizures, unresponsiveness or unconsciousness, or serious bleeding. These are general emergency warning signs, not symptoms specific to hiding after adoption.
