Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf a loved one in the hospital cannot have an in-person dog visit, try a live video call, a short recorded greeting, or a photo or letter. A plush dog or dog-themed activity may also offer something familiar to hold or do. These options can help maintain a connection, but they are not the same as being with a dog and are not proven substitutes for a visit. Before arranging any animal-related activity or bringing an item, ask the bedside nurse or care team what is appropriate for the patient and allowed by the hospital.
Ways to share a connection with a dog from a distance
Choose an option that fits the patient’s energy, access to a phone or tablet, and current care needs. A call is interactive; a recording, picture, or keepsake can be shared when a live conversation is inconvenient. None requires assuming that a dog can enter the hospital.
Live video call
Ask the dog’s handler to call from home, or ask the care team whether the hospital offers a virtual animal-assisted visit. UCLA Health describes virtual video-call stations with therapy-animal teams through its People-Animal Connection program: UCLA Health Pet Visit Stations. Station schedules and availability can change, so check directly.
Recorded greeting, photo, or letter
A short video or voice message can include the dog’s greeting, familiar sounds, or a small routine. A photo, a note written in the dog’s voice, or dog-themed artwork can be shared without coordinating a live call. The American Cancer Society’s 2025 Animal-Assisted Therapy in Pediatric Oncology: The ACS PAWS Guide for Hospitals describes videos, letters, and artwork as ways to maintain connection when physical visits are not possible. Its recommendations are written for pediatric oncology and isolation support, not as a universal hospital policy: American Cancer Society PAWS guide.

Plush dog or dog-themed activity
If the patient wants a tangible reminder, consider an optional plush dog stuffed animal, a dog-themed activity, or a facility-dog activity book. The ACS guide includes plush likenesses and activity books among possible connection ideas. Ask staff before bringing anything in; personal belongings may be subject to unit rules, infection-control precautions, or the patient’s needs. A plush toy is a keepsake, not a therapeutic device or a proven replacement for a live dog.
Ask whether the hospital has an animal program
Some hospitals have therapy-dog or facility-dog programs, and some offer virtual visits. Ask the bedside nurse, child life specialist, or other care-team contact whether a program is available and how to request it. Availability does not mean every patient can participate: the team may need to approve a visit, and eligibility can depend on the patient’s condition and precautions.

For example, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia says requests for its facility dog program go through the patient’s primary child life specialist or bedside nurse, and patients or roommates on contact isolation or precautions are not eligible for its facility-dog visit. Those are CHOP’s rules, not a rule for every hospital: CHOP Facility Dog Program.
If the patient wants their own dog to visit
Contact the hospital before making plans; do not bring a dog to the facility without prior approval. Personal-pet policies vary. UVA Health describes personal dog or cat visits in a hospital room for up to one hour a day with physician approval and other requirements. UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central generally bars personal pets, while describing a time-limited compassionate exception process for unique situations that requires approval from specified hospital leaders. These are examples of different facility policies, not national standards. Check the current policy and exception process with the patient’s own hospital: UVA Health Animals in the Hospital and UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central Pet Visitation Policy.

Why the care team’s advice matters
Animal access to a patient room should be decided case by case with input from the attending physician and nursing staff, according to the CDC’s guidance for animals in health-care facilities. A patient’s allergies, asthma, respiratory allergies of unknown cause, or immunosuppressive disorder may affect whether a visit is appropriate. A roommate’s circumstances and the unit’s precautions may matter too. The CDC page was dated January 8, 2024, and discusses guidance whose underlying environmental infection-control guideline dates to 2003; the hospital’s current rules and the patient’s care team are the practical authorities for a proposed visit: CDC: Animals in Health-Care Facilities.
If the patient is isolated, ask the care team whether a video call, recording, or item can be shared safely. A window wave or outdoor meeting may be possible in some circumstances, but only if the patient can take part and the facility permits it. Do not use these ideas to bypass isolation precautions or visitor rules; the ACS guide’s window-wave suggestion is an isolation-support idea, not permission to approach a hospital window.

What these alternatives can—and cannot—promise
Virtual contact and keepsakes are practical ways to share reminders of a dog, but the available evidence does not establish that they have the same emotional or clinical effects as an in-person visit. A 2022 peer-reviewed study of reactivating a hospital therapy-dog program noted that comparative effectiveness data for virtual versus in-person visits were unavailable to its authors: Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology study. Treat these ideas as ways to maintain connection, not as guaranteed treatments for pain, anxiety, or recovery.
