Build social confidence through calm, positive experiences, teach recall in safe low-distraction settings before gradually adding challenges, and reward the leash behavior you want. Keep your dog physically secure around hazards: a trained recall is never a guarantee that an unfenced area is safe.
What to expect from a Labahoula
“Labahoula” is a common name for a Labrador Retriever–Catahoula Leopard Dog mix, not a standardized breed with a predictable temperament. Breed descriptions can offer context, but they cannot tell you how a particular dog will respond to people, animals, new places, or training. Observe your dog’s comfort, behavior, and motivation, and adjust your approach accordingly.
The American Kennel Club and the National Association of Louisiana Catahoulas describe the Catahoula as independent, protective, or territorial, but those descriptions apply to the parent breed—not necessarily to an individual Labahoula. The Labrador Retriever Club identifies itself as the AKC-recognized national parent club for Labradors; the available sources do not establish a Labahoula breed standard or a reliable temperament profile for the mix. Read the AKC’s Catahoula Leopard Dog overview, the National Association of Louisiana Catahoulas’ standard, and the Labrador Retriever Club’s website for parent-breed context.
How to socialize your dog without overwhelming them
Socialization is the gradual development of comfort around people, animals, places, and everyday situations. It is not a requirement to greet everyone or to endure close contact. Let your dog observe at a comfortable distance and choose whether to approach. Pair calm observation with treats, play, praise, or another reward your dog enjoys.

Follow your dog’s body language
- Start far enough away that your dog can notice a person, dog, sound, or setting without being overwhelmed.
- Reward relaxed attention and voluntary engagement. If your dog looks worried, freezes, tries to retreat, or cannot take a reward, increase distance or end the interaction.
- Keep introductions brief and low-pressure. Do not force a greeting, hold your dog near something frightening, or use close contact as a test.
- Repeat manageable experiences and change only one challenge at a time—for example, a little more distance, a busier setting, or a new type of person.
A shy or fearful dog needs a slower pace and more room, not more exposure at close range. Appropriate social experiences should continue into adulthood. If a puppy shows fear, AVSAB advises seeking veterinary guidance. Its position statements and handouts include guidance on humane training and socialization.
Take puppy health precautions
Puppy classes can provide an organized setting for socialization. AVSAB’s puppy socialization statement says puppies entering class should be up to date on vaccinations and free of disease and parasites. It also advises avoiding dog parks and heavily trafficked areas where dogs’ disease status is unknown. Ask your veterinarian which experiences are appropriate for your puppy’s vaccination status and local disease risks. Read AVSAB’s puppy socialization guidance.

How to build a reliable recall
Teach recall by making it worthwhile for your dog to come to you. Begin at home or in another quiet, controlled place, then increase distractions and distance gradually. There is no established Labahoula-specific timeline or success rate; progress depends on the individual dog and the difficulty of the setting.
- Choose one cue. Use a clear word, such as “come,” and say it once when your dog is likely to respond.
- Reward the arrival. When your dog comes, offer a small training treat, praise, play, or another reward they value. Make arriving to you a positive outcome.
- Practice easy repetitions. Start nearby in a low-distraction space. Keep sessions short and repeat across ordinary moments rather than waiting for a single long practice session.
- Add challenge gradually. Increase distance or introduce mild distractions one at a time. Use a leash or other secure physical control so your dog cannot run into danger if they do not respond.
- Keep the cue meaningful. Avoid calling repeatedly when your dog is unlikely to come. Make the next repetition easier, regain their attention, and reward the response when you try again.
The AKC’s recall guidance recommends rewarding practice and cautions against letting dogs off leash in unfenced areas where they could encounter traffic or become lost. Even a strong response to a cue is a skill to maintain—not proof that an open area is safe.

How to teach loose-leash walking
Reward the behaviors that make a walk manageable: checking in with you, walking near you, and returning attention when you ask. Start somewhere calm enough for your dog to succeed. As those behaviors become easier, practice in gradually more distracting places.
- Set up safely. Use a leash and equipment that fit your dog. Begin in a quiet area where you can focus on rewarding the walk rather than managing a crowd of distractions.
- Reward attention and proximity. When your dog checks in or walks near you, mark the moment with praise and give a reward. Continue as your dog moves with you on a loose leash.
- Make distractions manageable. If your dog pulls toward something, create more distance or choose an easier route. Reward attention when your dog can re-engage, then build up to harder settings over time.
- Keep practice reward-based. Avoid leash jerks and corrections. AVSAB recommends reward-based training and does not support aversive methods such as choke, prong, or electronic collars.
AVSAB suggests that a front-clip harness may help manage pulling while you teach loose-leash walking. It is a possible management aid, not a cure or a substitute for training; choose one that fits the individual dog comfortably. Small training treats can make timely rewards convenient, but neither treats nor equipment replace gradual practice.

Speak with your veterinarian if fear is persistent, appears suddenly, or makes ordinary handling or outings difficult. If your dog shows aggression or ongoing reactivity, seek help from a qualified reward-based professional. Avoid trying to force the behavior away with punishment: it can make a difficult situation harder to manage, while a veterinarian can help assess whether health concerns are involved.
