A 2021 video report showed a young Asian elephant calf vocalizing beside his mother, Phoebe, at the Columbus Zoo. The zoo described the calf as “rather vocal,” sometimes making a low grumble; contemporaneous coverage called the sound a bellow. The zoo’s current profile identifies the calf as Frankie.
What happens in the video?
Daily Paws published its report on August 5, 2021, describing a video of the six-week-old calf moving in front of Phoebe and making a conspicuous sound. The report also quotes the zoo’s description of the calf’s occasional low grumble and his efforts to explore how to use his trunk. The available reporting does not establish the original social post’s exact URL or provide an independent analysis of the audio.
The clip is a glimpse of a young elephant exploring his surroundings near his mother. It does not document a keeper-led vocal lesson or show the calf learning human speech.
Who was the calf?
The calf was born at the Columbus Zoo on June 16, 2021, at 8:48 p.m. His mother was Phoebe, who was 33 at the time. The zoo’s current Asian elephant profile identifies the calf as Frankie and lists Hank as his father. The profile gives Frankie’s birth weight as 250 pounds.

The Columbus Zoo’s educational material notes that elephants can make sounds in the infrasound range, below human hearing. That general fact does not establish the acoustic properties or meaning of the sound in Frankie’s video.
How does Frankie’s birth fit into conservation?
Frankie’s birth was part of managed care for the Columbus Zoo’s elephant herd. The zoo described the birth as reflecting science, expertise, and collaboration among its teams and other facilities. A birth in a managed-care herd is a positive event, but it does not by itself show that wild Asian elephant populations have recovered or that pressures on their habitat have eased.
