Keep spiders out by sealing likely entry gaps, reducing hiding places and insect prey, and removing spiders, webs, and egg cases with a vacuum. These steps avoid pesticide application. In an apartment, ask management to address permanent or shared-building gaps; use sticky traps only where pets cannot reach them.

Start by blocking the ways spiders get inside

Check window frames, door edges, and other places where you can see cracks or gaps. The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) recommends sealing cracks and crevices, while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says sealing entryways from outdoors or elsewhere in the building can help reduce indoor pests.

For a small gap you are allowed to repair, paintable caulk or weatherstripping may be practical. If work is permanent, affects a door or window assembly, or involves a shared wall or other building structure, contact your landlord or building manager rather than making the repair yourself. Note the location and describe what you have seen.

Remove spiders and their webs without spraying

Use a vacuum to remove spiders, webs, and egg cases you find indoors. A crevice attachment can help reach corners and edges. Dispose of the vacuum contents or bag promptly, following the vacuum’s instructions and your household’s usual precautions.

NPIC notes that “Most spiders are harmless and helpful, eating bugs that wander inside.” That does not mean you need to leave one in your home: physical removal lets you clear it without applying pesticide.

Make the apartment less attractive to spiders

Reduce clutter and hiding places

Keep storage areas and floor edges as uncluttered as practical, especially where belongings sit undisturbed. Fewer hiding places make it easier to spot webs and remove them during routine cleaning.

Address insects that can serve as prey

Spiders feed on insects, so reducing indoor insects can also reduce a food source. Use basic prevention—such as keeping food and waste contained and addressing visible insect entry points—rather than applying pesticide broadly as a spider deterrent.

Are sticky traps safe around pets?

Sticky traps do not rely on pesticide, but they can still pose a problem if a pet can reach, chew, or disturb them. NPIC recommends placing cardboard traps along baseboards or under furniture, out of reach of children and pets; UC Integrated Pest Management (UC IPM) likewise conditions their use on pets and children being unable to tamper with them.

If your pet can access the placement area, skip sticky traps. Choose vacuum removal and gap sealing instead. A trap is not a pet-safe option simply because it is noninsecticidal.

Choose the method that fits the problem

Method What it does Pet-access consideration Apartment consideration Pesticide application
Seal visible gaps Helps prevent entry No pesticide exposure from the repair itself Ask management about permanent or structural repairs and shared-building gaps No
Vacuum spiders, webs, and egg cases Removes spiders and evidence already indoors Keep pets away while cleaning and dispose of contents promptly Usually a resident-level task No
Reduce clutter and indoor insects Reduces hiding places and a potential food source No pesticide exposure when done through routine cleaning and prevention Residents can handle household clutter; report recurring building-wide insect issues No
Cardboard sticky traps Can monitor or catch spiders Use only where pets cannot reach or tamper with the trap Placement is generally within the unit No
Pesticide treatment May target pests, but is not the first step for this goal Follow the product label, including directions to keep pets away from treated areas Coordinate with management or a pest professional as appropriate Yes

When to involve building management

If spiders keep appearing, especially near the same window, door, pipe opening, or shared area, record where and when you see them and send that information to management. Ask for an inspection and for gaps in the building envelope or shared structures to be addressed. EPA describes multifamily integrated pest management as coordinated work among residents, maintenance staff, pest professionals, and managers, so a recurring issue may need more than a single apartment-level fix.

If you repeatedly find a spider that may be medically significant, do not assume every spider is dangerous or try to identify it from a vague description. Contact a local cooperative extension or qualified pest professional for identification and advice relevant to your area.

If pesticide treatment is being considered

Because your aim is to avoid exposing pets, prevention and physical removal are the better starting points. EPA advises trying prevention first. If a pesticide is nevertheless used, read and follow every label direction, including instructions about keeping pets away from treated areas. Do not infer that a product is safe for pets merely because it is marketed for indoor home use.
