It cannot show sleep stages, explain why the dog moved, or prove that all big dogs behave alike. Whether sharing a bed works depends on the dog, the people in the home, and what the footage—and the household—actually reveal.
What does my dog do at night?
A camera with night vision can make a dark room visible without switching on a light. A clip may show a dog settling near its person, changing position, getting off the bed, or choosing a different resting place. Those are observations about movement and location, not a scientific measurement of sleep quality.
Consumer footage cannot identify sleep stages or diagnose discomfort, and a movement alone does not explain motivation. A dog leaving the bed, for example, may simply be choosing another spot; the video by itself cannot tell you why. The evidence available also does not establish special nighttime behaviors or risks unique to large dogs. Treat a clip as a record of one dog in one room, not a rule about big dogs as a group.
If you want to observe a dog when you are away, VCA advises considering a camera with night vision for a dark home. Choose a view that includes the bed, nearby floor, and any other spot the dog tends to use. A camera should document behavior, not substitute for veterinary advice if you are concerned about your dog’s health.

Choosing a camera for a dark room
Look beyond the words “night vision.” VCA recommends weighing range, image quality, audio, mounting, and privacy safeguards. It is also useful to check whether the camera supports recording, where clips are stored, who can access the account, and whether you can disable or cover the camera. Two-way talk is optional: some dogs may be unsettled by a voice coming from an unseen source.

Is it okay for my dog to sleep in my bed?
For many households, it can be. Tufts veterinary behavior guidance says most dogs may sleep in their owners’ beds if both dog and owner prefer it. The practical question is whether everyone can rest safely and comfortably—not whether bed-sharing is inherently right or wrong.
Dogs’ sleep has been studied directly, but the findings do not settle whether home bed-sharing benefits every dog. In a 2025 study in Animals, nine family dogs each completed three three-hour recording sessions in an unfamiliar setting. Using non-invasive polysomnography, the researchers compared sleep with the dog’s owner against sleep with a friendly unfamiliar person. The dogs had shorter sleep-onset time, higher sleep efficiency, and more deep sleep with their owners. Because the study was small, brief, and conducted away from home, it is an initial comparison—not proof of a universal benefit from sharing a bed at home or evidence specific to large breeds. How can bed-sharing affect the people in the home?
Dog outcomes and human outcomes are separate questions. A 2024 cross-sectional study of 1,591 U.S. adults reported that 47.6% of participants co-slept with pets. Pet co-sleeping was associated with poorer perceived sleep quality and greater insomnia severity. The study included pets generally, not only dogs or large dogs, and its design cannot show that co-sleeping caused those differences. The figure describes participants in that study; it is not a prevalence estimate for all U.S. dog owners. See the 2024 adult study.
Children’s sleep is another distinct consideration. A 2025 study followed 175 families for two weeks; the youth participants had a mean age of 9.51 years. Using actigraphy and sleep diaries, it found that youth with a pet on the bed had shorter sleep duration, lower sleep efficiency, and longer sleep-onset latency than youth with no pet in the bedroom. The authors said the results should be replicated. These findings do not mean every child or dog will have the same experience, and they are not evidence about large dogs specifically. When should a dog sleep somewhere else?
Safety and behavior matter more than size alone. Tufts cautions against bed-sharing when a dog shows aggression or relevant behavior problems, and says dogs should not be on the bed when an infant is sleeping in or near it. A dog should also have a sleeping place where young children will not disturb it. The guidance rejects dominance-based explanations for bed rules; the decision should be based on safety and the household’s needs.
The American Kennel Club likewise warns that co-sleeping can expose or worsen an existing resource-guarding or other behavior issue. If a dog guards the bed, growls, snaps, or otherwise makes the arrangement unsafe, move it to its own sleeping space and consult a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional. How to use a night-vision clip
- Frame the places your dog uses. Include the bed and enough nearby floor to see whether the dog moves to another resting spot.
- Watch for repeated patterns, not a single moment. Note where the dog settles and whether it leaves or returns. The clip shows movement; it does not establish the cause.
- Judge the arrangement by its effects. Consider whether the dog and people can rest, and whether there are safety or behavior concerns.
- Change the sleeping setup if needed. Offer the dog its own safe resting place, especially where guarding, an infant, or a young child makes bed-sharing unsuitable.
