The accounts say his repeated returns were linked to conflict with other pets in adoptive homes—but the shelter is not named, and the story has not been independently confirmed.
What happened to Benji?
In an account published January 12, 2025, iHeartDogs said Benji had been adopted and returned seven times, with little or no explanation given for the returns. A second iHeartDogs story, published July 8, 2025, recounts a similar history. Neither article identifies the shelter or provides its records, so the details are best understood as the outlet’s reporting rather than independently verified shelter history.

The two stories repeat the same central anecdote; they are not independent confirmation. The January account is available from iHeartDogs, and the July retelling from iHeartDogs.
Why was Benji returned?
According to the iHeartDogs accounts, Clara, a volunteer who took Benji home, saw him react aggressively toward her dog and cat. The articles say she looked into his history and learned that previous adopters also had other pets. They attribute the repeated returns to difficulties in homes with other animals; they do not provide detailed explanations from the previous adopters or a primary shelter account.

Did Clara adopt Benji?
The July 2025 iHeartDogs version says Clara worked with Benji and eventually adopted him. The January account also describes her taking him home and working with him. Because the reports do not name the shelter or supply independent confirmation of the outcome, the adoption should be attributed to the outlet’s account rather than presented as a verified shelter record.

Benji’s reported reaction to Clara’s pets is an observation in one home, not proof that he would behave the same way with every animal. Nor does the anecdote establish a diagnosis, explain exactly what support was used, or show that affection and persistence alone ensure a successful placement.

The ASPCA’s general guidance for shelters is to consider behavior information from multiple sources, including surrender information and observations by staff, volunteers, and foster caregivers. Its Position Statement on Responsibilities of Animal Shelters says: “Where there are concerns regarding behavior, the shelter should rely on multiple sources of information in making outcome decisions.” The statement also cautions that standardized behavior evaluations have limited predictive value for future aggression. This is broad shelter guidance, not an assessment of Benji.
