Shaking can be a sign of fear or anxiety in dogs, but it is not proof of anxiety—and there is no confirmed “magic remedy” in the story behind this headline. The dog’s identity, trigger, treatment, and outcome have not been established. If your dog is trembling, first consider whether it could be cold, ill, in pain, or exposed to something toxic; contact a veterinarian if the shaking is unexplained, new, persistent, or recurring.
What the headline does—and does not—tell us
The headline describes a mother finding a remedy for an anxious, trembling dog, but the available account does not identify the dog, explain what the remedy was, say how it was used, or establish whether it helped. It also does not confirm that a veterinarian diagnosed anxiety. Those details should not be guessed at, and “magic” should be understood as a headline’s description rather than evidence of a cure.
Can anxiety make a dog shake?
Yes. Trembling and shaking can accompany fear, anxiety, or distress. The American Animal Hospital Association lists them among commonly recognized signs of nonspecific anxiety or distress, and Cornell includes shaking among possible anxiety signs. Neither sign by itself identifies the cause: AAHA’s anxiety and fear guidance and Cornell’s overview of canine anxiety describe signs to consider in context.
Why else might a dog tremble?
Shaking can have causes other than anxiety, including pain, nausea, cold or wet conditions, low blood sugar, illness, medication effects, or toxin exposure. The American Kennel Club outlines these possibilities in its guide to why dogs shake. If the cause is unclear, assuming the dog is merely nervous can delay appropriate care.

When should you call a veterinarian?
- Call promptly if trembling is unexplained, new, persistent, or keeps returning. A veterinarian can assess the dog and investigate possible causes rather than treating one behavior as a diagnosis.
- Call immediately if you suspect your dog swallowed a toxin, including chocolate or a product containing xylitol. Contact a veterinarian or a poison helpline; do not try home treatment based on an internet remedy.
- Share useful details with the clinic: when the shaking began, how long it lasts, what was happening beforehand, whether it recurs, and any other changes you have noticed. This gives the veterinarian context for deciding what to investigate.
Cornell recommends arranging a veterinary visit to investigate the cause and develop a behavior plan, rather than choosing an over-the-counter supplement or online remedy on your own.
What can help if fear is part of the problem?
Once health concerns have been considered, support should match the dog and the situation. Predictable routines and behavior modification may help with recurring fear. A veterinarian can advise whether medication or referral to a qualified behavior professional fits the individual dog. For storm-related fear, Tufts describes setting up a safe space and discussing situational medication with a veterinarian in its guidance on helping dogs afraid of thunderstorms and other noises.

Do calming products work?
Some products may help some dogs in particular situations, but they are not guaranteed treatments. PetMD’s veterinarian-authored and reviewed article, updated July 7, 2025, notes that few calming products have been tested and proven through scientific research. It discusses pressure vests and interactive toys or puzzles as possible supports, with effects varying by dog and product: PetMD’s overview of calming products for dogs.
