Augustus was described as a dog whose skin was covered in hard, thick scales before Heart of Alabama Save Rescue Adopt (HASRA) rescued him. A later report says he received daily oil treatments and baths at the organization’s sanctuary. The story presents a striking rescue transformation, but the available account does not establish a veterinary diagnosis or show that the same care is appropriate for another dog.
What the story says about Augustus
An indexed iHeartDogs story identifies the dog as Augustus and says HASRA rescued him after he was found with hard, thick scales covering his skin. Its headline describes him as looking “unrecognizable” after rescue. The visible account does not provide a detailed timeline, veterinary records, or a confirmed explanation for the scaling, so the description should be understood as the story’s account rather than a clinical finding. iHeartDogs’ indexed story
What is known about his care after rescue
A separate report says Augustus was transferred to the HASRA sanctuary, where he received daily oil treatments and baths. It also says he enjoyed coconut-oil rubdowns. That report does not name a specific commercial product or establish a treatment protocol that readers should use for their own dogs. The sanctuary-care report
Why scales do not reveal a diagnosis
Scaling is a visible skin sign, not a diagnosis. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that skin inflammation can have many causes, including irritants, trauma, allergies, and infections. A dog may also show crusting, itching, thickened skin, odor, oiliness, or hair loss. A veterinarian may need a history and physical examination, along with tests such as skin scrapings, cultures, blood or urine tests, or a biopsy, to identify the cause. What to do if your dog has scaling
- Arrange a veterinary assessment rather than trying to identify the cause from a photograph or headline.
- Follow the veterinarian’s guidance on skin care and product choice; a treatment described in a rescue story is not automatically appropriate for another dog.
- If a veterinarian recommends a medicated shampoo, use the product and instructions they advise. Merck notes that shampoo can be one part of managing seborrhea while an underlying cause and secondary skin problems are addressed, and advises against using human shampoo without veterinary consent. This general guidance does not mean Augustus had seborrhea or used medicated shampoo. Merck Veterinary Manual: seborrhea
