Chase bared her teeth when rescuer Eldad Hagar reached toward her at South Central Shelter. According to Hagar’s account, the dog had endured years of abuse and was scheduled for euthanasia because shelter staff could not handle her. Hagar took her out of the shelter; the plan was to help her recover and find a home. Instead, Chase became part of his family and stayed for more than 13 years.

Why Chase tried to bite the person reaching for her

A 2023 account by iHeartDogs describes Chase in her kennel with her tail tucked and ears back. When Hagar reached toward her, she bared her teeth. The feature presents this as a reaction shaped by abuse, but the sources provide no veterinary or behaviorist assessment of Chase. Her behavior should not be treated as a diagnosis or as a guide to approaching a fearful dog.

Hagar, founder of Hope For Paws, later wrote that Chase had been abused for three years and was taken to South Central Shelter. He says she was scheduled to be euthanized because staff could not handle her. Those details come from Hagar’s retrospective; the accounts cited here do not include shelter records or independent documentation. Hope For Paws’ account of Chase is the primary source for his recollection, while iHeartDogs’ September 20, 2023 feature describes the kennel encounter.

How Chase’s rescue became a permanent home

Hagar says the original plan was to rehabilitate Chase and find her a home. She became part of his family instead. In his retrospective, he says she stayed with them for 8,421 days—“a little more than 13 years”—and that she had died by the time he wrote the account. He gives no exact rescue or death dates, and the number is his account of one dog’s time with the family, not a broader rescue statistic.

What this story can—and cannot—tell us

Chase’s story ends with a long stay in a family home after a difficult shelter encounter. It is also one rescuer’s account of one dog. The available sources do not establish an independent behavioral assessment, a detailed treatment history, or general outcomes for dogs with similar experiences.

The account says Hagar placed a leash on Chase, but does not identify its make or model. That detail does not mean a standard leash makes it safe for someone to approach or handle a fearful dog. This is a rescue story, not handling instruction.

Hope For Paws describes its rescue work and veterinary care on its About page.
