Coastal storms can flood or wash away sea turtle nests, while erosion and changes to dunes can leave eggs vulnerable to groundwater even when waves do not reach them. Storms may also bury nests in new sand, affecting hatchlings that survive the initial flooding. The scale and type of damage depend on the storm and the beach; historical Florida studies show why no single loss rate applies everywhere.
How do storms damage sea turtle nests?
Storms affect nests through several different mechanisms. Storm surge and high water can inundate eggs, depriving them of the conditions needed to develop. Waves and erosion can remove the sand containing a nest and wash the eggs away. A storm can also deposit sand over a nest, changing the conditions for eggs and hatchlings even if the nest is not swept away.
- Flooding: Saltwater or groundwater can inundate eggs and reduce hatching success or destroy a nest.
- Erosion and washout: Waves can strip away the beach sand that protects the nest.
- Sand accretion: Newly deposited sand can affect surviving hatchlings after the storm.
Damage is not limited to cases where surf visibly reaches a nest. Storms can reshape dunes and flatten a beach, bringing the surface closer to groundwater. A nest that appears to be above the high-tide line may then be flooded from below.
What can happen to nests after a storm?
Outcomes range from a nest being destroyed outright to lower hatching success or mortality among hatchlings that survive the first flooding. The physical mechanism and the beach’s shape matter: nest elevation, groundwater level, dune condition, and storm exposure can all change how a storm affects a nest.

Historical case: St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge
A NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center technical memorandum by Thomas E. Lewis reported on monitored nests at St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge in Florida from 1992 through 1996. Storms eroded, flooded, and/or deposited sand on nests. Across that five-year period, storms totally destroyed 55 of 211 monitored nests, or 26%. This is a result for that refuge and period, not a general rate for sea turtle nests.
Losses varied sharply by year: the report recorded storm losses of 38% of nests in 1992, 50% in 1994, and 43% in 1995; it reported no storm nest losses in 1993 or 1996. The contrast shows why a multi-year average should not be treated as a prediction for a particular beach or storm.

- Dual-Material Design for Durability & Comfort:Combines natural rattan’s soft texture with a chewproof steel frame to balance coziness and longevity. The rattan surface is gentle on birds’ feathers, while the reinforced steel structure resists biting from playful parrots—ideal for long-term breeding, sleeping, and nesting . Perfect for small to medium birds like cockatiels, budgerigars, lovebirds, finches, and canaries.
- Multi-Functional Hanging Nest & Swing:Features a single-hole design that mimics wild nesting environments, encouraging natural breeding and egg-laying behavior . Equipped with a sturdy hanging mechanism, it doubles as a swing for birds to play and rest—adding fun to their daily activities while providing a secure hideout. The compact size fits most bird cages without taking up too much space.
- Washable & Easy to Clean:100% washable material allows for quick cleaning and bedding replacement, ensuring a hygienic environment for your feathered friends . Simply hand wash or wipe with a damp cloth to remove dirt, feathers, or debris—no complicated disassembly required. Keeps the nest fresh
- Warm & Snug Sleep Hut:Thickened rattan construction and soft inner lining trap heat effectively, offering a warm shelter during cold weather . The enclosed single-hole design creates a sense of security, reducing birds’ stress and promoting restful sleep. It also serves as a private nesting space for breeding, protecting eggs and bird from disturbances.
- Tool-Free Installation & Versatile Use:Comes with all necessary hanging hardware (chain screw) for easy attachment to any bird cage—install inside or outside the cage in seconds . Suitable for multiple scenarios: breeding, sleeping, hiding, or swinging. The classic brown color blends seamlessly with most cage decors, making it a practical and stylish accessory for bird owners.
The report also compared hatching success in in-situ nests with insignificant depredation losses: 39 non-inundated nests had 79% hatching success, compared with 26% among 31 inundated nests. These figures describe that study’s nest groups; they are not a controlled estimate that can be applied to every location.
When the beach changes, groundwater can become a threat
At St. Vincent, Hurricane Opal washed away many dunes in 1995. The resulting beach was flatter, with its surface closer to underlying groundwater. In 1996, storms did not inundate nests, but groundwater inundated and caused total loss in at least seven nests. The report said those nests appeared far enough from high tide to avoid flooding, but the dunes no longer raised them above groundwater. This is a site-specific example of how a storm can create vulnerability that persists beyond the event itself.

Hurricane Andrew on South Florida beaches
A study of six South Florida nesting beaches after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 identified storm-surge flooding as the greatest source of mortality in the reported event, which affected nearly 90 miles of beaches. In a small sample of eight relocated nests on Fisher Island, 69% of eggs did not hatch after the hurricane and appeared to have drowned. The authors also described later mortality among surviving hatchlings in nests affected by sand accretion. The Fisher Island figure applies to those eight relocated nests, not to all nests exposed to Andrew or to storms generally.
How can storms affect future nesting habitat?
Storms and rising seas can change beach morphology and cause erosion, flooding nests or washing them away. Their lasting effect on habitat depends on how the beach changes and whether suitable dry sand remains; a storm does not necessarily mean permanent habitat loss.

- CUSTOMIZABLE ECOSYSTEM - Includes multiple drainage holes (4 sides) for creating streams or connecting water basins;Requires separate water pump/bathing pool (not included)
- SOLID CONSTRUCTION BUILD MATERIALS - Clear viewing panels made oftransparent visible panels acrylic securely fitted into durable plastic frame (recommend applying sealant for frequent movers)
- NATURAL HABITAT DESIGN - Supports live plants and bioactive substrates (some soil leakage normal initially); Not for deep-water turtles or fish aquariums
- EASY ASSEMBLY & DRAINAGE - DIY assembly required (gaps are normal); Includes detailed setup guide for creating ideal semi-aquatic environment with proper water zones
Shoreline hardening can further constrain nesting beaches. NOAA Fisheries says structures such as seawalls can cause complete loss of dry sand suitable for successful nesting. Where beaches cannot shift inland as water levels rise or shorelines change, nesting habitat may become more limited.

Do not touch eggs, dig into a nest, or try to move it. Nest handling and relocation are management decisions that depend on local conditions, and the historical practices described in the St. Vincent report should not be treated as a universal or current rule. Report a potentially damaged nest to the responsible local wildlife authority or an authorized sea turtle conservation program and follow its instructions.
