How to Teach Your Dog to Play Hide-and-Seek

Teach hide-and-seek as a short recall game: have your dog wait, hide nearby, call them to find you, and reward the discovery. Increase difficulty gradually.

Start in a quiet, familiar room: ask your dog to wait, hide just out of sight, call them to find you, and reward them when they do. Keep the first hiding place easy and the game short; make it harder only as your dog succeeds.

What you need before you start

This is a simple recall game: your dog waits while you hide, then comes to find you when called. A familiar wait or stay and a recall cue make it easier, but you can begin with very short distances and build those skills as you play.

  • Choose a quiet room your dog knows, with few distractions.
  • Pick a reward your dog enjoys: a small food reward, a favorite toy, or enthusiastic praise.
  • Use a familiar recall cue, or choose one consistent cue such as “find me.”

The RSPCA recommends minimizing distractions when teaching a new skill and using rewards; its reward-based training guidance describes food, toys, and praise as options.

How to teach the game step by step

  1. Practice a brief wait. Ask your dog to sit or stay. Take one small step away, then return and reward them for remaining in place. Gradually add a little time and distance. The RSPCA’s stay instructions use gradual increases in duration and distance.
  2. Hide somewhere obvious. While your dog waits, step behind a nearby doorway or a piece of furniture. Keep the first hide close and easy to find.
  3. Call your dog. Say your usual recall cue or your chosen “find me” cue once. The AKC recommends practicing recall in a low-distraction setting and rewarding the dog for coming; see its reliable-recall guidance.
  4. Reward the discovery. When your dog finds you, celebrate and give the reward you chose. The AKC describes the person as the ultimate reward in its hide-and-seek game instructions; adding a treat, toy, or praise can make the discovery rewarding for your individual dog.
  5. Repeat and progress slowly. Try another nearby hiding place after a successful round. Later, move to a different room or choose a less obvious spot. The AKC recommends increasing the challenge over time rather than beginning with difficult hiding places.

Keep rounds upbeat and brief. If your dog leaves before you call, practice the wait separately and make the next hide easier. If they seem uncertain or cannot find you quickly, reduce the distance or make yourself easier to locate before raising the challenge again.

Game What the dog searches for Good starting point
Person search You Hide just out of sight and call your dog with a familiar cue.
Toy search A favorite toy Place it somewhere obvious, then encourage your dog to find it.
Food search A treat or kibble Begin with food in an easy-to-find spot or scatter a small amount in a clear area.

For food-search games, increase difficulty gradually. The AKC offers ideas for puppy hide-and-seek and treat searches and for using mealtime for food-search training. A snuffle mat is another optional way to let a dog search for food, but it is not needed for person-focused hide-and-seek.

Keep the search safe and appropriately easy

Start indoors in a familiar, controlled space. Do not turn this indoor game into an off-leash outdoor search unless you have suitable control. The AKC’s brain-game guidance advises matching outdoor search difficulty and distractions to the dog’s experience and choosing an appropriate location.

Hide-and-seek is a recreational game, not search-and-rescue training, and playing it does not establish that a dog can locate a missing person in an emergency. There is no established number of sessions or guaranteed learning time for teaching this particular game; let your dog’s comfort and success set the pace.
