- Keep operating controls inaccessible. Move cords, chains, loops, and adjustment controls out of your dog’s reach. Do not assume that gathering the fabric also makes the controls inaccessible.
- Secure the installation appropriately. Choose hardware and mounting suitable for your wall or trim, window, and treatment. No particular tieback, fabric, coating, or mounting method has been established as resistant to a dog’s chewing, claws, or pulling.
- Change the setup if the dog keeps targeting it. Blocking access to the window area or replacing the treatment may be more useful than relying on fabric choice alone.
These are practical ways to reduce access, not pet-damage measures validated by controlled testing. The sources do not establish that any particular material or treatment will withstand a dog.
Which window treatments are alternatives to curtains?
If loose fabric or exposed controls remain a problem, consider a format that removes fabric from your dog’s reach or avoids dangling operating cords. The Window Coverings Association of America identifies cordless or motorized roller, Roman, and cellular shades as options, and describes shutters as inherently cord-free. How to assess a “pet-resistant” claim
Do not treat “cordless” as a synonym for “pet-resistant.” For example, Draper describes its FlexShade UpLift as cordless and says it is certified to the stated standard, but its product information makes no dog-durability claim. A product description or safety certification that does not address chewing, scratching, or pulling is not evidence of resistance to those behaviors.
The available sources do not establish a recognized dog-resistance rating or identify a curtain fabric, liner, holdback, or mounting system that outperforms others against pet damage. Look for relevant manufacturer testing or independent documentation before relying on a pet-resistance claim.

Child safety: treat window-covering cords as a separate hazard
If young children may be in the home, cord safety matters independently of whether a dog can reach the treatment. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says cordless window coverings are the only option to eliminate the strangulation hazard and calls them the safest option when young children are present. Its guidance for existing coverings can reduce risk but does not eliminate the hazard. Follow the CPSC’s current window-covering cord guidance.
- Shorten dangling pull cords and keep cords out of children’s reach.
- Correctly adjust cord stops.
- Anchor continuous-loop cords to the wall or floor.
- Move furniture away from windows so children cannot climb to a cord.
In an October 5, 2021 release, the CPSC reported an average of about nine children age five and younger dying each year from strangulation involving cords on blinds, shades, draperies, and other window coverings. The same release reported nearly 200 incidents involving children up to age eight related to window-covering cord strangulation hazards from January 2009 through December 2020. These are child-safety figures, not estimates of dog injuries or pet-related damage. The CPSC’s release is available here.

What current window-covering standards do—and do not—tell you
The Window Covering Safety Council announced on June 7, 2024, that the revised ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 standard had a compliance date of June 1, 2024, for products manufactured on or after that date. Its announcement describes restrictions on free-hanging cords for custom products and cordless or inaccessible-cord requirements for stock products.
