If your dog refuses canned food, first check how they feel—not just whether they like the meal. Food preference, texture, freshness, stress, or routine can explain a refusal, but illness, pain, and difficulty eating can look the same. Contact your veterinarian promptly if your dog seems painful while eating, is vomiting or has diarrhea, is lethargic, is a young puppy, or has a condition such as diabetes. If your dog otherwise seems well, check the food and recent changes, then ask your veterinarian whether a different suitable formulation or a simple serving adjustment is appropriate.
When to contact a veterinarian
A dog’s refusal to eat can be an early sign of illness, and apparent pain or trouble eating may point to more than a food preference. VCA Animal Hospitals Urgent Care advises prompt veterinary evaluation when a pet has decreased appetite, refuses food, or seems to be in pain while eating (VCA Urgent Care).
- Call promptly if the refusal comes with vomiting or diarrhea, or your dog seems lethargic or painful.
- Get veterinary advice early for a young puppy, a dog with diabetes, or a senior dog that seems to want food but cannot eat normally. Some senior dogs may only manage soft food; that change still warrants advice rather than guesswork.
- Do not use a food swap to postpone care if your dog’s refusal persists or other symptoms appear. AKC advises contacting a veterinarian if a dog does not start eating within 12–24 hours; this is its clinical guidance interval, not a study statistic, and higher-risk dogs or dogs with symptoms may need help sooner (AKC: Why Won’t My Dog Eat?).
When you call, note when the change began and whether anything else changed—such as medication, food, schedule, or household routine. Share any symptoms and whether your dog is drinking and behaving normally. That context can help your veterinarian decide how urgently your dog should be seen.
If your dog otherwise seems well, check the likely causes
Food freshness and recent changes
Check the can and food for signs that it is no longer fresh, and consider whether you opened a new recipe or changed the feeding schedule. A formulation change may affect whether your dog accepts the meal. Illness, medication, stress, and changes in routine can also affect appetite, according to the AKC.

Flavor and texture
Some dogs prefer one texture over another. If your dog is eating normally otherwise and has no veterinary diet restrictions, ask your veterinarian whether another appropriate flavor or formulation is worth trying. Prescription foods may also be available in different flavors; check with the prescribing veterinarian before switching.
Stress, routine, or medication
Think about what was happening when the refusal started: a change in household routine, a stressful event, or a new medication may be relevant. Do not stop or alter prescribed medication or a veterinary diet on your own; ask the veterinarian about the appetite change.

Low-risk ways to make canned food more appealing
For an otherwise well dog, veterinary sources describe a few simple serving adjustments. Use them only if they fit your dog’s health needs and any diet instructions from your veterinarian.
- Add water: Cornell notes that water can be added to food to make it more appealing. Ask before adding anything if your dog is on a prescribed diet.
- Warm it gently: Warming may increase the food’s aroma. If using a microwave, stir the food thoroughly and check it for hot spots before serving; VCA specifically warns about hot pockets in microwaved food (VCA: Tips for Getting Your Dog to Eat).
- Consider another suitable flavor or formulation: Cornell notes that preferences vary and prescription diets may have flavor options. Confirm that an alternative is appropriate for your dog’s condition before changing it (Cornell: Picky Eaters).
- Ask before adding broth or other extras: VCA includes a small amount of low-sodium broth among possible palatability approaches, but additions may not suit every dog or veterinary diet. Check with your veterinarian first.
How to change foods without an abrupt switch
If your veterinarian agrees that a different food is appropriate, transition gradually instead of replacing the old food all at once. AKC describes an ideal transition of about 5–7 days, progressively increasing the new food while decreasing the old; dogs with sensitive stomachs or medical conditions may need a slower or veterinarian-directed change (AKC: How to Switch Dog Food).
