Neither canned nor fresh dog food is automatically better for every dog. Choose by checking whether the specific food is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage, then compare its calories, nutrient information, storage directions and fit with your dog’s needs. If your dog has a health condition or needs a therapeutic diet, ask your veterinarian before changing foods.
Start with nutritional adequacy, not the food format
“Canned” and “fresh” describe formats, not whether a food supplies the nutrients a dog needs. Check the exact product label for a statement that it is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage. In the United States, the FDA explains that such a statement may be based on meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or passing an AAFCO feeding trial. The package should identify the basis and intended life stage; a food intended for a different life stage may not be the right choice for your dog.
FDA guidance on reading pet food labels is available at Complete and Balanced Pet Food and FDA’s complete-and-balanced food overview. Check the product’s current label rather than assuming every food in a format has the same nutritional status.
Compare nutrient levels with moisture in mind
Guaranteed-analysis percentages are generally shown “as fed,” so moisture affects how concentrated nutrients appear. FDA says canned pet food is typically 75–78% moisture and recommends converting to a dry-matter basis when comparing foods with substantially different moisture levels. That means a protein percentage on a can should not be compared at face value with the percentage on a fresh food or dry food.

For example, to compare protein, use the protein and moisture percentages from each product’s own guaranteed analysis. This gives a more meaningful basis for comparison, but it does not by itself tell you which food is nutritionally complete or appropriate; check the adequacy statement and life stage as well. FDA also cites 10–12% moisture for dry pet food as context for its comparison example, not as a description of fresh food.

Use calories and feeding directions to set portions
Look for the calorie statement on the specific product and note the unit it uses, such as calories per can or per cup. Follow that product’s feeding directions as a starting point, then consider your dog’s individual condition and needs when deciding how much to serve. A serving size from one product cannot automatically be transferred to another because calorie density and directions may differ.

Factor in storage and food-handling routines
Storage requirements differ by product, and the routine has to be practical for your household. FDA advises promptly refrigerating or discarding unused canned or pouched pet food, tightly covering refrigerated leftovers, and keeping the refrigerator at 40°F or below. For fresh refrigerated food, follow the specific package’s storage and handling directions; one storage duration should not be assumed to fit every product.
FDA’s pet-food handling advice is at Tips for Safe Handling of Pet Food and Treats. FDA also notes that animal foods must be safe, produced under sanitary conditions, free of harmful substances and truthfully labeled; canned pet food must comply with low-acid canned food regulations. Those requirements do not establish that all canned and fresh foods have identical safety profiles.

Let your dog’s health and your veterinarian guide special cases
If your dog has a medical condition, has difficulty maintaining an appropriate weight, or needs a therapeutic diet, discuss the specific food and its use with a veterinarian. Do not assume that a canned or fresh format—or marketing language about a format—proves a health benefit. FDA advises pet owners to consult a veterinarian with questions about an animal’s health or the specific use of a food or other product.
FDA’s guidance on pet food and animal health is available at Complete and Balanced Pet Food and Getting Help for Your Pet.
A practical way to choose between canned and fresh
- Check the label: confirm the exact food is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage, and note whether the statement refers to an AAFCO nutrient profile or feeding trial.
- Compare nutrient information fairly: if moisture levels differ substantially, use the dry-matter conversion rather than comparing guaranteed-analysis percentages as printed.
- Compare calories and directions: review calories per stated unit and use the product’s feeding guide as a starting point for portions.
- Check whether storage fits your routine: make sure you can follow the opened-food and refrigeration directions for that product.
- Get veterinary guidance when needed: involve your veterinarian for health conditions, therapeutic diets or questions about whether a particular food suits your dog.
There is no established universal winner on cost, palatability or health outcomes from the available evidence. If price matters, compare current products on a like-for-like basis—such as cost for the calories you feed—rather than assuming one format is always cheaper.
