Start by searching your home and the area around the last place your cat was seen. Cats may hide silently, so check enclosed spaces carefully; then notify local shelters and animal services, update the microchip registry, and share one clear missing-cat notice with your neighborhood. Work through the checklist below and keep following up.

1. Search your home before looking farther away

Ask everyone in the household when and where they last saw your cat. Search slowly and check small, dark, enclosed places: under beds, inside closets and drawers, in cabinets, behind appliances and bulky furniture, and in crawl spaces. A cat may be hiding, trapped, sick, or injured, and may not meow or respond when called. Try a familiar food or treat sound, then pause and listen.

2. Search close to the last-seen location

Walk slowly around your home and the place your cat was last seen. Look under porches, shrubs, cars, and decks, and inspect accessible garages, sheds, and other places where a cat could hide or become shut in. Use a calm voice and give the cat time to respond; a quieter period, such as early morning or late evening, may make listening easier. A flashlight can help you see into dark hiding places.

Ask neighbors for permission to check their yards and buildings. Do not enter private property without permission. Bring a recent photo to show neighbors and others who spend time nearby.

A 2018 study in Animals found that among 477 cats recovered alive with a recorded distance, the median distance from disappearance to recovery was 50 m; the 25th and 75th percentiles were 9 m and 500 m. This is an observational finding, not a prediction for an individual cat, but it supports taking a nearby search seriously. Read the study.

3. Report your cat missing and check identification records

Contact local animal control, municipal and private shelters, veterinary hospitals, and rescue groups. Contact police where appropriate or where there is no nearby shelter. Ask each organization to record the report and how you can follow up. Check shelters regularly; when possible, visit in person and bring a photo to leave with staff.

If your cat has a microchip, contact the chip company and confirm that the registered phone number and other contact details are current. ASPCA advises owners who have moved or changed phone numbers to update the chip registration promptly. See ASPCA guidance for a lost pet.

4. Make one clear flyer and share it locally

Use a large, readable “MISSING CAT” heading and a recent, clear photo. Include the cat’s description and identifying details, last-seen date and location, and reliable ways to reach you. Two phone numbers can help if one is unavailable. Keep the same photo and details across printed notices and online posts so people can recognize the cat and contact you.

  • Share the notice with neighbors, veterinary offices, pet-related businesses, and busy local spots.
  • Post it in relevant community social media groups and ask page administrators to share it.
  • Tell community-cat caretakers and trap-neuter-return (TNR) volunteers. They may notice an unfamiliar cat at a feeding station or encounter a pet while trapping.

5. Post and search lost-and-found listings

Submit a lost report to relevant lost-pet services and search their found-cat listings. Pet FBI says its report can generate a flyer and alerts for matching newly submitted found-cat reports. Also check local lost-and-found groups and listings: reports may be spread across multiple platforms, so one post is not a complete search. Recheck for new matches rather than relying on a single search.

Visit Pet FBI for its lost-pet resources.

6. Choose search methods based on your cat’s behavior

A frightened cat may hide silently and avoid people. If you have reason to believe your cat is nearby but it will not approach, a baited humane live-capture trap may be an option. This is a situation-specific measure, not a standard step for every missing cat. Ask local humane societies or animal control whether they lend or rent traps before buying one, and monitor any set trap frequently because another animal could enter it.

If you are unsure whether a cat is visiting a particular feeding location, a camera there may help identify visitors before you decide whether trapping is appropriate. For more behavior-related guidance, see Pet FBI’s action plan.

7. Keep following up

Continue searching, contact shelters again, and refresh local reports when the service allows. Keep neighbors and local animal-care networks supplied with current contact details. ASPCA’s guidance encourages owners not to give up; a particular timeline or outcome cannot be guaranteed.

What recovery figures can—and cannot—tell you

In a national telephone survey of pet-owning households, ASPCA reported in 2012 that 74% of lost cats were recovered. Among recovered cats, 59% returned home on their own, 30% were found through neighborhood searching, and 2% were found at a shelter. The interviews took place from September through November 2010, so these are historical survey findings, not a current forecast for an individual cat. Read the ASPCA survey summary.

The 2018 Animals study also reported that 59% of cats for which a physical search was conducted were found alive. The study’s search-method comparisons do not establish that searching caused the outcome. These figures are context, not a guarantee of recovery. Read the study.
