The right shelter cat is the one whose temperament, history, and care needs fit the home you can actually provide—not simply the one that catches your eye. Before visiting, consider your household’s pace, available time, children, other pets, and ongoing-care budget. Then ask shelter staff what they have observed about each cat and what kind of home may suit it.
Start with the home you can offer
Be candid with shelter staff about daily noise and activity, how much time you have for play and care, who lives in the home, and whether you have other animals. Mention practical limits as well as what you hope for in a companion. Cats Protection says its staff get to know cats in their care to help match them with suitable owners; a realistic picture of your household helps make that conversation useful. Its guidance is from the UK, and shelter practices and available cats vary by location.
Temperament and individual needs matter more than appearance. Cats differ in sociability, energy, and comfort with handling, so look for a fit with your household rather than a particular look or breed. Ask staff about the cat’s preferences and behavior in familiar surroundings: a short meeting in an unfamiliar shelter environment is only one moment, not a complete personality assessment.
What to ask shelter staff
Use the conversation to learn what is known about the individual cat, not to seek a guarantee about how it will behave in every new situation. Helpful questions include:

- What is known about the cat’s previous home and experiences?
- How does the cat behave with adults, children, visitors, and handling?
- Is the cat playful, energetic, shy, sociable, or more independent when comfortable?
- Has the cat lived with other cats or dogs, and what did staff observe?
- Are there health or care needs the household should plan for?
- What type of home does the shelter think would suit this cat?
Observe without forcing contact. If the cat seems shy, ask how it acts with familiar caregivers; nervousness around a new person or setting does not by itself establish that it will always be withdrawn. Cats Protection recommends meeting a potential cat, learning its likes and dislikes, and speaking with a vet about health concerns.
Should you adopt a kitten or an adult cat?
Age can help narrow the choice, but it does not guarantee a particular personality. Cats Protection notes that a kitten’s character develops over time, while an adult cat’s personality and habits are more established. Staff may therefore be better able to describe an adult’s preferences and energy level.

| Consideration | Kitten | Adult cat |
|---|---|---|
| Personality | Adult temperament is not yet established; character develops over time, according to Cats Protection. | Personality is more established, and staff may be able to describe habits and preferences. |
| Time and supervision | Needs substantial care, patience, and supervision, especially around young children. | May be more settled, but assess the individual cat’s care needs and energy. |
| Possible fit | A confident kitten may suit an active home if the household can manage its needs. | A calmer adult may suit a household seeking a more predictable companion. |
These are tendencies, not promises about any individual animal. Choose based on what the shelter knows about the cat and what your household can manage.
Choosing a cat for a home with children
Ask about the cat’s experience with children and comfort in a busy environment. Consider the children’s ages and the household’s usual activity, alongside the individual cat’s history and temperament. Cats Protection suggests looking for a confident, friendly cat with a positive history around children or a personality suited to a busy home; that does not mean every friendly cat will enjoy every child or situation.

Kittens and young children need close supervision together. An older, calmer cat may be a better fit for some families, but the individual animal’s needs and tolerance matter more than age alone.
Choosing a cat when you have other pets
Do not assume a cat needs feline company. Cats Protection says cats often prefer to live alone. If you are considering more than one cat, a bonded pair may be a better prospect than introducing unrelated cats, but compatibility remains individual. Ask the shelter about the cat’s history with other animals and whether its observed temperament may suit your resident pets.

Plan for a gradual introduction rather than immediate contact. Cats Protection recommends gradual introductions, particularly when a cat is joining a home with another cat. A separate settling area gives the newcomer space while the animals adjust; some pets may not become comfortable together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare a calm start at home
Set up a quiet place where the new cat can settle, and do not force contact with people or other pets. The ASPCA says a newly adopted pet may initially feel nervous or overwhelmed and recommends routine, patience, and time and space to observe the home. Follow the shelter’s advice for that cat, and give it room to approach at its own pace.

Include ongoing care in your decision
Before adopting, consider whether your budget can cover the cat’s continuing needs. Cats Protection identifies food, litter, toys, pet insurance, and veterinary care among the costs to consider. Actual costs depend on location and the individual animal, and shelter fees, included care, and adoption terms vary by organization. Ask the shelter what is known about the cat’s health and care needs and what costs or services are included in its local adoption process.
