Before a foster animal arrives, confirm the care plan with its shelter or rescue, then prepare a quiet, secure home base where it can settle away from resident pets. Remove hazards, gather only the supplies your program does not provide, and follow the organization’s guidance on health separation, cleaning, and introductions.

What should you confirm with the shelter or rescue before pickup?

Start with the organization’s plan for this particular animal. Ask about age, known health concerns, medications, feeding schedule, behavior, likely foster duration, and whom to contact after hours. Confirm who arranges veterinary care and what food, equipment, and cleaning supplies the program covers before buying anything.

Policies vary. For example, ASPCA NYC says it provides foster caregivers with food, equipment, supplies, training, and medical care; that is a description of its program, not a guarantee from every shelter or rescue. Check the ASPCA NYC foster program details and ask your own coordinator what applies locally.

If you have resident pets, ask whether their preventive veterinary care or vaccinations should be current, how long the animals should remain apart, and what introduction steps are appropriate. ASPCApro advises that resident pets be up to date on preventive veterinary care before introductions to foster animals. ASPCApro’s foster-care disease-prevention guidance explains the reason for separation and hygiene precautions.

How do you prepare a room for a foster dog, cat, or kitten?

Set up a quiet, secure, easy-to-clean home base before pickup. A spare room is often useful; choose a contained area that suits the animal’s size, behavior, and the foster organization’s instructions. Keep the space calm and predictable so the newcomer can rest without having to navigate the whole home immediately.

For cats and kittens, Humane Society Silicon Valley recommends a climate-controlled, cleanable, cat-proof, secure space. A spare bedroom or bathroom can work; if a dedicated room is not available, its guide describes a large dog crate as a possible alternative. See HSSV’s foster cat guide and confirm that any alternative is suitable for the individual animal.

Provide the basics the organization recommends:

  • Separate food and water bowls and the animal’s usual food.
  • A comfortable resting place and, for cats, a hiding spot.
  • Toileting supplies: a litter box for cats, or the outdoor access and supplies specified for a dog.
  • For cats, a litter box placed away from food and water, plus any approved toys or enrichment.

ASPCA recommends starting a cat in one home-base room with food, water, toys, treats, and a litter box, then allowing access to other rooms gradually as the cat becomes comfortable. Its advice is useful for a newly arrived foster, but your foster coordinator’s animal-specific plan takes priority. Read ASPCA’s home-base and settling-in guidance.

What hazards and escape routes should you check?

Walk through the home at the animal’s level and remove items it could chew, swallow, knock over, or get trapped behind. Cats may climb or squeeze into small gaps; dogs may reach objects or rooms that seem out of bounds. Before arrival:

  • Tuck away electrical cords and block gaps or spaces where the animal could become stuck.
  • Secure windows and screens; do not rely on an open window or a loose screen to contain a pet.
  • Remove poisonous houseplants and pest-control poison traps from accessible areas.
  • Put small objects, food, valuables, and cleaning products out of reach, especially in a cat’s room.
  • Plan how to prevent escapes through frequently used doors, including during arrivals and departures.

Keep the first days quiet. For foster cats and kittens, HSSV recommends time to decompress, a regular routine, and keeping visitors away initially. Give the animal room to approach at its own pace rather than requiring interaction.

How long should a foster pet stay separate from your pets?

Use separate rooms or another secure arrangement at first, and follow the foster organization’s health-separation instructions. ASPCApro states, “Generally, newly arrived foster animals should be separated from pets in the home for 14 days.” Its guidance also describes situations where a shelter may assess a shorter period based on factors such as health, age, shelter stay, and recent exposure. HSSV recommends a two-week quarantine for foster cats and kittens. These are organizations’ recommendations, not an automatic rule for every animal; ask the coordinator what period and precautions fit your foster. ASPCApro disease-prevention guidance and HSSV’s foster cat guide provide their respective details.

How should you introduce foster and resident pets?

Begin introductions only when the organization says it is appropriate and the health-separation period is complete. Move gradually, keep the animals controlled, and supervise every interaction. A secure gate or exercise pen can help with brief visual contact, but it does not replace a separate room or direct supervision when either is needed. Ask whether your organization supplies equipment before purchasing it.

Introducing dogs to dogs

HSSV recommends putting away valued toys, chews, and food, meeting outdoors on a walk, and supervising every interaction. Keep the first meeting low-pressure and create space to separate the dogs if either becomes uncomfortable. HSSV’s foster dog guide outlines its introduction advice.

Introducing a foster dog to a resident cat

Keep the cat’s refuge somewhere the dog cannot enter. For early scent and visual contact, HSSV suggests using a leash and a barrier, such as a pet gate, and rewarding calm behavior. Do not force the cat closer or allow the dog to chase. Keep the animals apart whenever you cannot supervise them.

Introducing cats to cats

Start with separate secure spaces. HSSV recommends a barrier that lets the cats see one another without touching or chasing, and treats to help create positive associations. Increase access gradually in line with their responses and the foster coordinator’s advice.

Supervise children around foster animals. Teach them not to disturb an animal while it is eating or sleeping and not to take its toy, treat, or chew. HSSV’s cat guide and dog guide include household-safety guidance.

What cleaning and health precautions should you plan?

Infection can spread through direct contact and through contaminated hands, clothing, brushes, and other objects. Follow the foster organization’s cleaning protocol and the product label rather than improvising a dilution or contact time. ASPCApro recommends this sequence:

  1. Wash your hands and use the hygiene precautions specified by the organization.
  2. Remove visible organic material from surfaces and items before disinfecting.
  3. Apply an effective disinfectant at its labeled dilution and for its required contact time.
  4. Keep supplies used for a sick foster animal dedicated to that animal’s separate room when instructed.

Do not mix cleaning products. If the foster shows possible signs of illness, contact the shelter or rescue promptly and keep the animal isolated from resident pets while you follow its instructions. ASPCApro’s disease-prevention guidance for foster care covers hygiene and response precautions.
