To keep stray dogs out of your yard humanely, close the route they use to enter, secure accessible food and trash, and use a sturdy physical boundary where practical. Avoid poison, injurious traps, and harmful chemicals. If a dog appears aggressive, injured, or ill, keep your distance and contact your local animal-control office or shelter for guidance.

Start by finding what is drawing the dog in

Look for an obvious entry gap and for things that may attract a roaming dog, such as accessible garbage or food left outdoors. Secure those attractants and close the route if you can do so safely. These are sensible prevention steps, not a proven stray-dog control protocol.

Observe from a safe place rather than approaching the dog. If it seems distressed or dangerous, do not try to catch or corner it.

Use a physical boundary where practical

A fence or repaired gap is the most durable approach supported by the available dog-management guidance, though the guidance addresses containing dogs in their own yards—not tests of excluding unfamiliar dogs. The Humane Society of the United States discusses burying wire or fence material, placing large rocks along a fence line, and laying chain-link fencing at the base to address digging or escape (Humane Society of the United States). ASPCA guidance recommends secure, opaque fencing to limit a household dog’s access to outdoor space (ASPCA).

Bonide Go Away! Rabbit, Dog, & Cat Repellent Granules, 3 lbs Ready-to-Use, Keep Dogs off Lawn, Garden, Mulch & Flower Beds
  • Go Away! Rabbit, Dog & Cat Repellent Granules by Bonide effectively and naturally repel animals and deter them from forbidden areas in your yard, lawn and garden.
  • Use this product as a training aid! While this product is an animal behavior modification tool, it may need to be supplemented with other behavior modification techniques to break domestic animals and pets of existing bad habits.
  • Natural active ingredients are people and pet safe when used as directed. Cinnamon oil and Thyme oil act as a natural deterrent to keep cats, dogs and rabbits out your garden.
  • Protect yard, lawn, garden, flowerbeds, trees and shrubs. Natural essential oils are biodegradable and will not harm desirable plants around your home.
  • Go Away! Animal Repellent Granules arrive conveniently ready to use! The east-to-use dispenser cap allows you to evenly distribute pellets throughout your outdoor space to begin pest control.

For your yard, first identify the dog’s actual route in. Check whether a boundary can close that route, whether there are gaps or weak points at ground level, and whether a barrier is feasible for your property. Before installing or changing a fence, check applicable local rules and property restrictions.

Consider motion-activated sprinklers cautiously

Motion-activated sprinklers are sometimes described as a way to scare wildlife away. Florida wildlife guidance discusses them for wildlife, and the Wisconsin Humane Society describes a harmless burst of water while noting that repellents do not keep animals out of an entire yard (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission; Wisconsin Humane Society). Neither source establishes that sprinklers reliably deter stray dogs.

Citronella Dog Deterrent Spray, Dog Spray Self Defense, Training and Barking, Long-Range Dog Repellent, Portable Canister (0.5oz / 2oz)
  • Humane Behavior Interruption: Helps redirect barking, lunging, or jumping using a short burst of plant-based citronella scent. Designed to interrupt behavior quickly — without causing pain or injury
  • Safe Distance Defense: Stay protected with a powerful directional spray stream — up to 14 or 18 feet depending on the version. Ideal for deterring off-leash dogs or breaking escalating behavior from a safe range
  • Compact & Travel-Ready Design: Choose the 0.5oz keychain with clasp for convenient on-the-go use or the 2oz flip-top for daily walks and outdoor adventures. Both fit easily in pockets, bags, or on your leash or belt
  • Eco-Conscious & Non-Toxic Formula: This dog deterrent spray is formulated with natural citronella oil. This pet deterrent spray is free from pepper, alcohol, or propellants — making it a cruelty-free alternative for pet correction and protection
  • Built for Everyday Walkers: Use as a dog repellent spray, dog fight stopper or personal defense tool. Trusted by pet parents, trainers, joggers, and mail carriers to help stay in control during unexpected dog encounters

If you choose to try one, consider sensor coverage, access to water, weather, and whether it may activate around household pets or people. Treat it as an uncertain, potentially inconvenient measure—not a substitute for closing an entry route or seeking local help when needed.

Avoid methods that could hurt animals

The Humane Society of the United States warns against using any product or method that could be toxic or dangerous to pets or other animals. Do not use poison, injurious traps, or harmful chemicals to deter a dog. Humane prevention means limiting access and removing incentives without causing injury.

When to contact local animal services

Reporting procedures vary by location. Contact your municipality’s animal-control office or a local shelter for current advice, especially if the dog appears ill, injured, aggressive, or keeps entering your yard. A general model ordinance cannot establish which rules apply where you live (Animal Legal & Historical Center).

Until you receive local guidance, keep children and pets away from the dog and do not attempt to handle or capture it.
