Some pets settle quickly; others need more time. A gradual introduction—rather than immediate access to the whole home or forced contact—helps you respond to the animal in front of you.
Prepare a quiet home base before arrival
Set up one calm room or bounded area where your pet can rest and retreat. Make sure it is easy to secure, and provide fresh water, food, a comfortable resting place, and essentials suited to the animal. For a cat, include a litter box, scratching post, and a place to perch. A gate can help limit access to other parts of the home.
Before the pet arrives, secure doors and windows, cover or put away cords and chewable items, and remove poisonous plants and other hazards. Keep the space quiet and avoid placing the home base in a busy walkway. These steps follow the ASPCA’s preparation guidance; supplies make the space usable, but they cannot replace supervision and patience.
Start small and let your pet explore gradually
On arrival, take your pet to its home base rather than opening the whole house at once. Keep food, water, resting space, and—if it is a cat—a litter box accessible. Let the animal look around and approach you without pressure. Keep voices and activity low, and do not force affection, handling, or meetings with other pets.

When your pet appears comfortable in its first space, offer access to another room while keeping other areas closed. Expand access in manageable steps and continue to provide a quiet retreat. If you need to move a cat’s litter box to its long-term location, the ASPCA advises moving it gradually rather than relocating it abruptly (ASPCA cat guidance).
Keep routines steady and give adjustment time
Use a calm, predictable routine for meals, rest, bathroom breaks or litter care, and interaction. Offer positive experiences and clear boundaries, but give your pet time and space to observe. Hiding or keeping distance can be a way to seek safety in an unfamiliar place; do not drag an animal out of hiding or treat reluctance to socialize as a reason to intensify contact.

The ASPCA’s “3-3-3 Guideline” describes a rough progression through the first three days, three weeks, and three months. It is an orientation, not a clinical rule or promise that every pet will follow the same schedule. The ASPCA notes that some pets adjust quickly while others need more time (ASPCA adoption guidance). Let your pet’s comfort and behavior—not a calendar—guide how quickly you add new rooms, people, and experiences.
Introduce resident pets in stages
Keep the new pet separate from resident animals at first, using a closed door or suitable barrier so they can become aware of one another without being forced into contact. Supervise introductions, proceed slowly, and allow periods of separation. Do not stage an uncontrolled face-to-face meeting or leave unfamiliar animals together unsupervised.

For cats, the Humane Society of the United States recommends giving the resident cat time and allowing it to get to know the newcomer through a door or baby gate while the new cat has a safe room. It also advises against requiring cats to share a litter box (Humane Society cat-introduction guidance). The American Veterinary Medical Association likewise advises slow, supervised cat introductions with separation until the cats accept one another (AVMA cat guidance).
There is no single introduction protocol here for every dog-to-dog or dog-to-cat pairing. If you are concerned about safety or see sustained distress, ask the adoption organization and your veterinarian for advice tailored to the animals; a qualified behavior professional may also help.

Arrange veterinary care and know when to seek urgent help
Arrange an initial veterinary visit soon after adoption. A veterinarian can review your pet’s health and advise on checkups, vaccinations, parasite prevention, emergencies, and other needs. For a nontraditional pet, look for a veterinarian experienced with that species. The ASPCA and AVMA both recommend prompt establishment of veterinary care (ASPCA adoption guidance; AVMA new-pet guidance).
Do not assume serious symptoms are simply part of settling in. The ASPCA lists pale gums, rapid breathing, difficulty standing, seizures, loss of consciousness, and excessive bleeding as emergency warning signs (ASPCA emergency-care guidance). Seek veterinary emergency care for serious signs. The list is not exhaustive, so call your veterinarian or an emergency hospital if you are uncertain about a symptom.

Adjust the plan to the individual pet
How quickly to expand a pet’s world depends on its species, age, health, temperament, past experiences, and the people and animals already in the home. Watch how it responds as you add space and social contact. If a step appears overwhelming, return to a quieter setup and seek individualized advice rather than relying on a fixed timeline or a single behavior to diagnose stress.
