How to Introduce a Rescue Dog to Other Pets

Use gradual, supervised introductions to help a rescue dog and resident pets adjust safely. The right pace depends on each animal’s behavior.

Introduce a rescue dog to resident pets gradually, one animal at a time. Start with separation and scent exchange, then move to brief, controlled meetings only when everyone seems calm. Keep the dog on a leash during early contact, give every pet a way to retreat, and separate them whenever you cannot supervise. There is no universal timetable: let the animals’ behavior—not the calendar—set the pace.

Before the animals meet

Learn what is known about the dog

Ask the shelter or rescue for the dog’s history around the species in your home, including any known chasing, fear, or calm interactions. The Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ 2022 shelter-care guidelines say behavior information should accompany an animal at transfer and that introduction advice should be tailored to the animal’s history and behavior.

A shelter behavior assessment can help inform your plan, but it is not a guarantee of what the dog will do at home. The ASPCA’s position statement on shelter dog behavior assessments explains that assessments are brief and that behavior can change with emotional state, stress, and setting.

Prepare a quiet retreat

Set up a comfortable area where the new dog can eat, drink, and rest without being approached by resident pets. A separate room is one option; a crate may be used if the dog is comfortable in it. A barrier can help maintain separation, but it does not replace supervision. Keep the animals apart whenever nobody is watching them.

If your resident pet is a cat

Start with scent and separation

Do not begin with a face-to-face meeting. Keep the dog and cat in separate areas and let each investigate the other’s scent. American Humane Society recommends rotating access to parts of the home over several days so the animals can explore one another’s scent without direct contact. Keep them separated when you are away.

Move to brief, controlled meetings

When both animals appear calm, allow a short meeting in a shared room. Keep the dog securely leashed and give the cat room to retreat. If the cat already tolerates a harness and leash, that may add control, but do not restrain the cat in a way that removes its escape options.

Continue with short, calm sessions. Signs that the interaction is becoming easier include the dog relaxing and beginning to ignore the cat, while the cat appears at ease, continues eating, and uses the litter box normally. Hissing or swatting can communicate uncertainty or a boundary; do not punish or force contact. Create more space and slow down.

If your resident pet is another dog

Begin with a parallel walk

Meet outdoors in neutral territory, with each dog handled by a separate person if possible. Seattle Humane recommends starting about 10 feet apart and walking in parallel; move closer only while both dogs remain relaxed. Keep leashes loose and allow only brief greetings rather than holding the dogs together for an extended introduction.

Bring the dogs into the home carefully

After a calm outdoor meeting, pick up food, high-value treats, and chews before going inside. Bring the new dog in on leash to explore, then bring in the resident dog and reward calm behavior. Avoid crowded doorways, and remove toys and food bowls during early home meetings. Give each dog a comfortable place to take a break.

Continue shared walks and short, supervised time together. Separate the dogs whenever you cannot directly supervise them. If either dog grows tense, create space and return to an easier stage. Growling or snapping is a signal to increase distance—not a reason to force the dogs to continue interacting.

For birds, rabbits, reptiles, and small mammals

The guidance cited here addresses dog-cat and dog-dog introductions; it does not establish a species-specific method for introducing a dog to birds, rabbits, reptiles, or small mammals. Prevent the dog from accessing these animals and ask your veterinarian, rescue, or a qualified behavior professional for an individualized plan. Do not assume the cat or dog steps are appropriate for a different species.

Choose a pace that fits these animals

Compatibility depends on the individuals, not just their species. Consider the dog’s and resident pet’s prior experience with one another’s species, energy level, size and vulnerability, confidence, play style, and ability to disengage. Watch for behavior such as chasing, pinning, rough handling, hiding, or difficulty giving the other animal space.

For dogs, also consider differences in activity, communication signals, and play roughness. A dog that enjoys intense play may overwhelm one that prefers space, even without apparent aggression. The AVSAB article notes that fostering can offer a way to observe compatibility in a home over time.

Some dog-cat pairs begin to feel comfortable within a few days; others need several weeks or longer, according to American Humane Society. Treat that as a range, not a deadline. Advance when the animals are calm and their normal routines remain steady; step back if either shows discomfort.

When to stop a session and get help

End the interaction, create distance, and slow the process if an animal remains highly stressed or you see persistent fear, fixation, intense chasing, lunging, snapping, hiding, or refusal to eat. For dogs that show ongoing tension, return to separate spaces and easier, shorter interactions rather than relying on repeated exposure to resolve the problem.

American Humane Society lists persistent fear, stress, aggression, lunging, snapping, hiding, or refusal to eat as reasons to consider professional guidance. Humane Society of Utah also advises responding to growling or snapping by creating space and slowing down. If fear or aggression seems excessive or unprovoked, consult a veterinarian, as advised by the American Veterinary Medical Association. The Association of Shelter Veterinarians cautions that management may not prevent every aggressive incident, so maintain separation when safety is uncertain.

Keep the setup simple and safe

  • Leash: Use a suitable leash for controlled early meetings, with loose handling; do not pull animals toward one another.
  • Separate area: A quiet room gives the new dog space to settle. A crate is an option only if the dog is comfortable in it.
  • Barrier: A gate may help create separation, but the guidance cited here does not compare or endorse specific gates.
  • Supervision: Keep animals apart whenever you cannot directly supervise their interaction.

Humane Society of Utah’s resident-pet introduction guide also recommends comfortable break spaces and removing toys and food bowls during early meetings between dogs.
